QUESTION: A friend of mine is having an issues on paying rent.
Here is the scenario:
If a couple and a friend are living in a 2 bedroom unit (where the rent is pay per unit), how should they divide the rent? (one room is bigger than the other, and the couple took the bigger room)
Try this website: https://www.splitwise.com/calculators/rent . It calculates based on size of rooms and common areas and determines a good base point for rent splitting.
ReplyDeletedepends, are utilities included or not?
ReplyDeletesplit total rent three ways would be most fair, or the couple pays a bit more than ur friend
ReplyDeleteThis is currently my situation. My girl friend and I each pay 30%, our roommate pays 40%. Utilities are split 3 ways.
ReplyDeleteI may be this guys roommate, it's a good system. Go with this OP.
DeleteI think the rent should be spilt evenly by the three of them. The couple's room is bigger, but there's two of them in there so it sorta evens out. Plus the three of them are sharing living spaces, kitchen, bathroom and (possibly?) utilities.
ReplyDeleteThe total rent should not be split evenly. Because even though there are two people in one bedroom, its still one bedroom in a 2 bedroom unit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with post 4, great solution.
couple showers save on water, so water bill won't matter

DeleteI would say 50/50 for rent but 33.33/33.33/33.33 for utilities. In terms of living space, the couple counts as 1 as they're only using one bedroom. I mean, if you were sharing the 2-bedroom with one other person and that person, at some point, allowed their partner to move in, you'd still only be splitting it 50/50. Utilities, on the other hand, will increase with an extra person so I think it's fair to ask everyone to pay to cover those.
ReplyDeleteHowever the rent is divided, the utilities/internet need to be split 3 ways.
ReplyDeleteMy roommates has his gf visiting for the half the summer and we don't expect her to pay rent. She isn't taking up any extra room and she even cooks and cleans for us sometimes.
