QUESTION: I have a serious question, but what do the residences do with all the left over food at the end of each day? Throw it away? I use to work in one of the university college kitchens and they would throw away perfectly good meals. Some days we would have it for left overs. But why not just give it to students who need the food?

  1. Because why would anyone purchase a meal plan then?

  2. the regular residences are managed by food services - probably a question for them! hope they do something other than a garbage bin :-/

  3. Maybe incentive issues. If I knew there was a chance that I'd get free food at the end of the day, would I spend money during the day to get food? Nahhh. Not saying all students would think this way, but I can certainly see a substantial portion of them thinking as such.

  5. Food gets composted throughout the day. The residences have green bins inside and out back. As for giving food to students who can't afford food, UW has the Food Bank. Kitchener-Waterloo also has a Food Bank.
Hope this answers your question OP. If you'd like to ask about food for students who can't get food, direct your question to Food Services :)
