QUESTION: Ladies: What do you do when construction workers rudely cat call you? The condo that I pass when I walk to the bus stop is under-going construction and I have consistently been cat called while walking by even when walking on the other side of the road and wearing baggy hoodies. Wondering what others do when this happens because it's honestly starting to bother me.

  1. Record them on your phone next time. Then report the company to the cops for sexual harrassment.

  2. Flip them off. I'm a guy and this would really put me in my place. Even if the immediate reaction is hate or brovado, just make it clear that the calling is entirely and on every level unwanted.

    1. I don't think you understand, your intentions are good, but this reaction would not shut them up. They would go from sexual harassment to violent verbal harassment. The only real recourse is to report them.

  3. I just completely ignore them. One of the first times, some guy was like "Hey, what's your name beautiful" and I responded while I kept walking away from him because it felt rude to just totally ignore someone. Then he followed me chatting me up for a while which is hard to get out of. So now I just ignore them but then some of them will yell at me for being rude or stuck up or they'll just insult my looks. There's no winning...

    1. So what if it feels rude? You owe them nothing. NOTHING. You were minding your own business and you have zero obligation to answer them. Next time stand there and dial the police. Don't put up with shit from them. It's harassment plain and simple.

  4. Which company is this please? I've had this happen too and I'm wondering if it's the same people.

  5. If this is the development by marshall this happens to me too and it SUCKS. Ignore them and they keep shouting, say anything and they get encouraged, get mad and they get mad. No winning.

    1. I mean, by catcalling they've already revealed themselves to be (at the very least) assholes. Yeah, you never win arguing with an asshole.

  6. 1) Find out what firm the guys work for
    2) Complain to a high-ranking person at the company
    3) Watch the shit roll downhill

  7. Ignore them. Or cross the road. Or stop and say something along the lines of "Hey, look I know you probably have good intentions but please don't do that again to me. Thank you" and keep walking.

I mean it probably isn't worth anybody's time to pursue legal action. If you have a significant reason to, go for it, you have the right to walk around without harassment. But like why not just take the path of least resistance?

    1. "Like", because the path of least resistance = continuing to be a victim. It gives them a free pass to keep making people feel uncomfortable because it it does not affect them negatively in any way. If women start making it very uncomfortable for them - ie. reporting them to the police or management for harrassment - that's the only thing that will start to change their behaviour. Saying anything directly to them will only provoke them further. Your suggested quote is kowtowing to them and will cause them to double down on what they're saying. So yes, it IS a significant enough reason to raise a big stink about it (btw, "legal action" means filing a lawsuit, you sound pretty stupid, I suggest you never give advice about anything).

    2. 7a maybe you went a bit too far with the insult and your overall confrontational tone. Let's have an objective and clean discussion, yes? How can you possibly ask for respect while being disrespectful?

Have you ever had this done to you and you simply straight up no bs asked them to stop then walk away? I am curious because you make the large assumption that just by using your words, things will only get worse.

People have the right to a comfortable life. All I am saying is if you truly care about this issue, I encourage you to not only go to court for that particular incident, but to also commence a nation wide movement consolidating all women to raise enough awareness and concern to end it once and for all. Otherwise you might as well just get on with your day and not let 10 seconds of annoyance create so much negative energy within you.

    3. I agree with 7a "because the path of least resistance = continuing to be a victim".

  8. If they're bothering you then tell them to stop, or check the doghouse and see who is in charge for management. Contact management and discuss what's happening. Odds are they are temp workers and can be replaced.

I've worked in construction in the area and across Canada. I can say that I've personally never seen this type of behavior wherever I've worked so it certainly is not the norm.

  9. I second the idea of filming them. Get their faces on video and confront them about how it's wrong to do. If they don't apologize on video, it could look *terrible* to the company they work for, which is all the more reason for you to either post it on youtube, send it to the media, or just send it to their bosses to express your disapproval.

  13. OP here, sorry for the late replies - I did actually end up filing a complaint a week or so ago on their website and so far, so good.

I chose to file the complaint for many reasons including that they were incredibly disruptive when they yelled across the street and it's just super disrespectful. I'm sure I wasn't the only one either that felt harassed by some of these men too. It wasn't a construction site near campus btw, it was in Kitchener.
