QUESTION: What residence is the best for a first-year honours science student?

I'm considering between rev, v1, st. jeromes and renison...
For the university colleges is it hard to interact with people living in other residences? im worried that it'll be hard to make friends with people in the same faculty as me as i wont be socializing with them as much. What the difference between renison and st jeromes?

  1. If you can join a living-learning community, I would recommend it. I did that in first year, we were in REV. About half of the floor was in science, mostly my program, and it was good to be able to work together, on top of just meeting and getting to know people in your program. Sometimes that's hard to do just in the classes themselves. I have also heard really good things from friends who did Renison in first year, and are still good friends with people from their floor.

    1. Untrue. In any res, it's somewhat luck of the draw; your dons/equivalents may be more or less strict. Evidently this poster had a bad experience; but in my year, the majority of dons were cool with anything that wasn't too blatant.

  4. Renison does focus more on science.

It's also worth noting that Ren is nominally Anglican, while SJ is nominally Catholic; this won't affect your experience much, but there will be related events/services at each.

Both have all-you-can-eat food, and SJ's at least is significantly better standard cafeteria fare.

Having lived at a UC, it's not particularly hard to meet main-campus people; and you have the advantage of a smaller, close-knit community of your own.

On the whole, I'd recommend one of them.

  5. I lived at SJ years ago so I can't speak for the social aspect currently. When I was there, everyone got along well and it was a great community. We all recognized each other and had caring and fun dons. The residence is somewhat recently renovated so it's a lot nicer than some other residences (girls rooms have sinks in them!). The lounge is lovely. I had no trouble meeting people while I lived there, both from the same residence and from classes. Your religion does not matter and will not be affected there, unless you're catholic, then there's a bonus that they have services there as well.

REV and V1 are more loud and party residences compared to SJ - you cannot be caught drinking if you're underage there. Also, I believe Renison has coed bathrooms if that matters to you.

I was in Science and met many people in residence in the same classes and still made friends with people in classes. First year classes are usually large so you should have no problem meeting people if you're friendly. Good luck!

  6. I lived at CLV, the residence itself was amazing, had a kitchen, living room, dining room, patio, bike room etc. but it was too spread out, didn't meet many people, and way to far from campus. Don't live there if you will be on campus late or don't like to cook.

  7. I'm a biomed student and I lived in V1 single room. I was able to meet a lot of people in my program from labs (lab partners), orientation, and science social events. My don in V1 had weekly events that gathered everyone in the building. REV for sure had a lot more parties than V1 in my year. UWP was isolated from everyone so a lot of my friends that lived there did not get a lot of social interactions except for their roommates.

You can also try to join clubs to meet new people or volunteer. Defiantly try to become an Orientation leader for science of Feds and you'll meet tons of people there.

  8. I lived at Renison in my first year. I hated that there were "mealtimes" and that since I had class until 10pm, I had to eat whatever leftovers were put in the fridge. I couldn't just go to the caf at V1 and pick something up or use my meal card. Otherwise, Renison was a nice community.

  9. I lived at SJ and it was a great place to stay. The food was AYCE and pretty decent. Some days food was a bit sketchy but overall good. SJ is on the more expensive end in terms of residence but when I was there it was a fairly tight community where you knew most people. As to fines, don't get caught, I remember a lot of stuff going on when I was there that would have been at minimum a nice fine...

  10. Don't live in a college residence. The kids there are so exclusive it's like they are in a cult. You will be made fun of by main campus kids. Don't do it. Save yourself from the weirdos
