QUESTION:
There is a rumour in one of the social science departments at UW that a professor got a tenure position (they were a lecturer previously) because they are romantically linked to another tenure professor in the same department that brings in a lot of funding. They went through the entire process of "interviewing" new professors yet they already had a professor in mind (the spouse had threatened to leave) Thoughts? Is this unethical?

  1. I feel like I know who you're talking about. I really hope it isn't true, because yes that would be very unethical.

    4. OHHH SHIT. Polisci, a particular "marxist" professor who basically gets a tenure position because her bf is a bigshot. So unethical.

  2. Good thing that tenure track isn't based on the rumour mill.

    1. This comment really makes no sense. There's a LOT that goes on behind the scenes that know one knows about.

    2. @2a, 2 is saying that it's a rumour, and we don't know if this person got hired bedcause he is qualified or because of his relationship with another faculty member, so don't jump to conclusions
