QUESTION: Passed 1A Engineering…. Barely.
A GPA within the 65-70 range doesn't make me very competitive for jobs, especially in Oil, which is all I really want to do. It's not exactly comforting that all of my friends in my program finished with 80s and 90s, so what's that to say for how low I rank? Even in upper years, it'll be difficult to get into O&G without a good first Co-op. If I can't get one by upper years, I'm fucked, since experience and marks seem to be the golden goose. I don't want to have to settle for another field of work, so I'm working to improve my grades this term, but I'm still worried that without prior experience from Co-op, if not gotten, O&G won't give me a second look post-grad.
Oh OP, please don't be so dramatic. Oil is not difficult to break into and I've done it on multiple co-ops with failed courses. Resume is key.
ReplyDeleteOP do you expect everyone to feel sorry for you?
ReplyDeleteWhat's the question?
ReplyDeleteWork hard and you will be fine. I know people in my class (Eng) who barely passed first year and even failed a class or two and now they are getting high 80's to 90's and are probably in the top 20% of the class. Not all employers care about marks. If you go in with a negative attitude you probably will be fucked. Take this first term as a lesson, figure out what you can do to improve and move on.
ReplyDeleteDon't be discouraged OP, I'm in graduate school now and you should see my first year marks, I think if I showed any of my students in my lab they would walk out! Work hard, if you have a low gpa right now try to figure out what you can improve on (maybe a different way to study)
ReplyDeleteWith oil prices as low as they are, you may want a back up plan to working in Oil. As a Calgary native and resident, I know that hiring freezes have already been implemented at many oil and gas companies and layoffs have just begun. So regardless of your marks, you may want to take an alternative route.
ReplyDeleteYes, your life is over. Switch to Arts.
ReplyDeleteDespite what you may think, your marks are not always the thing that employers higher you for. I'm in 3A Chem Eng now, with a cumulative 63 average, and I have worked in oil and gas for my past two co-op terms. My first co-op term wasn't even in my degree field. Just learn how to market yourself. Volunteer experience, clubs, hobbies, do anything you can do to beef up your resume. Just have a positive attitude and keep working towards your goal.
