If the subject requires a lot of memorization for content that you know for sure will be used on assessments, like formulas or a process of analysis, it helps to get a head start by studying early. I've seen a lot of success with this.
Otherwise, for subjects that require heavy reading loads where it is uncertain how marks will be distributed, don't waste your time studying in advance.

I always do my week1 readings one week before class starts. This way I am ahead of the game. Always pays off.

DeleteOP here: did the same thing. 2 weeks of concentrated study is enough to finish a course or major part of it, lets see how this pays off.
