Check out the first year engineering office. If you've just failed the one course and your average is still decent, you can proceed to 1B and clear the failed course later.
If just fail one or two courses and your average is still over the minimum, you continue to 1B. There's opportunities to make it up later as an extra class. It's a pain, but not impossible as first year courses often have other options to make it up (online courses, other department courses). And hopefully it's the kick in the ass you need to not fail anything more.
