  1. Not race specifically, but new immigrants. Its not negative or positive, just know I know their mannerisms much better.

  2. fob asians..definitely more negatively

    1. For that one black guy, I give you every fucking white male in CS. Jesus christ they're morons. Look at all the fucking whienrs that can't pass 245...

I don't think you can claim they're letting in stupid people on account of their race if you look at the racial breakdown of stupid people in general on campus. Requiring anyone who's not white to be a genius to attend is discriminatory.

    2. Did you notice asians group in max of like 3~4s while brown kids will mob in 8+ crowds? I think that kind of adds to the noise level.
(Exam time 18hr DC crash studying experience = morning/afternoon crowds to avoid, asians in small groups chatting in corners of lib. 1am onwards = brown kids in large groups in high traffic areas cracking jokes and laughing loudly)

  5. International students are some of the nicest people I've met. Also, international students are some of the most rude people I've ever met. Cuts both ways I suppose.

Brown females as entitled pretentious bastard.

  6. Before university I was very much of the opinion that its wrong to judge other cultures by your own culture's standards. Then I lived with an international student in res during first year, and quickly stopped thinking that way. The casual misogyny and anti-semitism quickly made me re-evaluate the stance that all cultures are equal.

    1. Anti-semitism? Surprised to see that's still a thing. Which race did that come from? Most white people conciously avoids any anti-semitism nowadays and I don't know any other race that has historical problem with the Jews.

  7. I used to think that people were joking about fobs not being able to handle cold, but goddamn I have seen some crazy reactions to it.

Freaking 10C outside and there are people in full winter jackets. At -20 a lot of my classmates just stayed home.

To be fair I would probably melt in the UAE, but I still, it takes two weeks to acclimatize to cold if you actually let your body feel it.

    1. Worked in Fort McMurray for the fall term where there was at least two days below -40 for my last month. Came home and it was around 0 and I was the only person I saw at the airport wearing a t-shirt and carrying my jacket.

    2. @7.a I grew up in Calgary, it got -40 with wind chill a few days every winter. Moving out east I was surprised to see people complain when it was 0.

  9. I've grown to dislike FOBs in general (mostly brown and asian) because they don't know whats acceptable in a library.

My position on Muslims hasn't really changed. I like some the more rational muslims and dislike the extremists.

I've become more open to Sikhs. I used to lump them in with muslims but I've met a lot of really great sikhs.

In terms of established Canadians, I like them all regardless of race.

    1. (and yes I know Sikhs and Muslims are not a race), I found however that they both have distinct cultural identities pervasive among their religions.

  10. Grew up where the closest thing to an immigrant was if someone's family immigrated after the 1920's. My opinion really hasn't changed much after meeting many different cultures. Everyone is different, don't care really. There are some assholes who think they own the place, but there are some really nice ones worth talking and making friendships with. It varies really.

Feminists however... Fuck. That. Shit. Cannot stand them.

    2. ^ Sums up why I can't stand feminists. If you say you don't believe in their cause they try to shame or play the victim card. Rather pathetic.

      Delete
    3. 10a, do you even know what feminism means? It's equal rights for BOTH male and female parties.
The belief of females being better than males is female superiority, that's the kind of stuff that should be looked down upon. Don't mix the definitions up dude.

    4. 10c you just went full retard.

    5. > If you say you don't believe in their cause they try to shame or play the victim card.

To be fair, I think it's perfectly reasonable to shame people that don't support equality for 50% of the population.

Some classy ableist slurs coming from 10d, too! This is why I can't stand anti-feminists. If you say you don't believe in their cause, they get indignant, scream and call names and play the REAL victim.

      Delete
    6. ^ 10(b) here. That's quite an assumption that I don't support equality. Again why I think feminists are not worth supporting.

  11. Tbh I've grown rather racist. Or, more accurately, I am sometimes annoyed by, and never really get friendly with, people from completely different cultures. It's not ill will, I wish them no harm; I just don't like to interact with them. The whitewashed minorities (like myself) are OK though.

    Also, I hate feminists too.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think most people hate feminists. Being an egalitarian is fine, I am one (male), but most active feminists seem like they fight for more rights then men.

    2. > most active feminists seem like they fight for more rights then men

Dude here, also a feminist. Can you please explain? At no point have I ever fought to give women more rights than men. Genuinely don't understand the hatred of feminists that comes up in these threads..

  12. This is going to sound so racist...but I have grown a serious disdain for Asians who weren't born in an English-speaking country. If you're Asian and were born here/in America, so have no accent and are polite/grew up in this culture, I have no problem with you. But I have a hard time understanding Asian accents (even if it isn't a really thick one) so I get really annoyed when I can't understand someone and have found, in my experience, most Asians rude, outrageously cheap, and dirty.

My first year I shared a UWP apartment with 2 Asian girls. They never cleaned unless I told them too, and would be smashing around in the kitchen at 5am. Dirty and rude. That's just one example of many. And I have NEVER seen an Asian-owned house where the owner wasn't trying to cram 6 or even 7 students into a living space that should be for 4 or 5, to try and make more rent money. And they have ALWAYS made internet and utilities extra. Sometimes even charge for visitors. All other ethnicities I've rented from have never done this.

I'm sure these things aren't the case for all Asians, but sadly I can only judge based on my own experiences.

My incapability to understand Asian accents isn't their fault. I know that. But if an Asian server fails to understand ME, that's a big problem. You work in the service industry in an English-speaking country. How can you get mad at me for not leaving a good tip, when you didn't understand me enough to know you gave me the wrong order and I was trying to send it back? The worse time was I was once PRAISING the food, and she didn't even understand that! I try and be nice and I'm given a look of 100% confusion.

I also have a hard time understanding east-Indian accents (or anywhere near-ish there) so I lose me temper when talking to them too...but if I can understand you you're usually really nice people!!

Oh God I'm an awful person...

    1. I totally agree with the dirtiness part. I had 2 Asian roommates in first year residence that were absolutely disgusting. One of them had maids and shit in Taiwan so he didn't really understand how necessary cleaning was. It got to the point one day where there was a container full of mouldy peach juice sitting in our kitchen that they just left out and absentmindedly forgot for a few months.

    2. Same as above with chinese girls I roomed with on one of the lester buildings for a sublet term... leaves full drain catch of food in sink, I'm generally easy going so I picked up after them for a few months and stopped to see how long they'd let it go. After about two weeks of letting it rott in the sink one of them flipped the catcher over and attempted to stuff the shit down the drain (pretty unsuccessfully) I had to hold my breath as I passed the kitchen and ate out for about a month and a half while this happened...

Honest question. Is this socially acceptable for most chinese people or where these girls just sore exceptions to common courtesy? They cooked nearly every night too...

    3. In regards to 12a and b, many of the international students from China come from rich families. They are used to having maids clean their mess. They are most likely an only child. All of this adds up to = spoiled, bratty, immature

    4. I have to agree with this (12) too

  13. It seems here most people don't hate/dislike anyone born here/USA, but foreign students because they are rude. This might come from the fact that it is really expensive to come from another country for school, especially when the currency is so weak. This would let only the rich come over, who had a much higher chance of being spoiled all their life, and considering almost everyone "below" them.

Not saying this is true of all rich foreign students. My roommate in first year was from Hong Kong, super rich (the view from his parents penthouse was spectacular, his private school has a full golf course) and super nice. He had some rude habits, but it was more of a cultural thing than actually not caring for others. He viewed everyone as equal, and treated everyone with respect. He had a strong accent, but had good English (used correct words, in the correct order).

    ReplyDelete
  14. Like a lot of other people here, I came to University with the mindset that everyone is equal and I have no right or reason to dislike someone because of their race. Then I lived in residence where half of my floor was International from Asia.

I now find that I have a huge dislike and intolerance for the culture, as so many of the students were rude, dirty, and unwilling to adapt to the new culture that they moved to. As someone who has lived internationally, I truly believe that when you move to a new country, you need to try and adapt to the new culture and should not expect exceptions for your behaviour. FOBs (or at least the ones I met) did not do this at all. They were rude to me, left everything a complete mess, left their dirty underwear in the sink (in a washroom for 24 people), let smelly food sit out for hours or days, and had zero consideration for times that people might be sleeping or studying.

  15. Well if I'm stereotyping:

    - Asian people are a lot stupider than I initially thought
    - People from India speak very formal English
    - ESL people all seem to have been taught that you need to say "excuse me", after you've already gotten my attention.
    - There are a lot of Chinese foreign students that don't know any English
    - Arabs are loud as fuck and don't even realize it
    - Asian girls, especially from China, are completely oblivious of their surroundings and like walking really slowly in huge walls so that no one can get around them

  16. Not really. I normally don't interact very much with people from other cultures on a regular basis, due to the program I'm in and where I lived as a first year (one of the colleges). I'm Canadian-born Chinese girl and almost all of my friends from the college and my group of friends in my program (who lived at home or in V1) are white.

  21. As a Chinese male, I love every comment. People shouldn't be surprised at how low people really are, living in a world where most people are pretentious, this is beyond normal. However you want to define it, racial preference, culture preference, racist, rude. It seems a lot of people here have problems with international students because they do not follow their rules of everyday life, I think the problem lies within the exchange of context and language. This becomes a problem when salty urgent people have no patience for understanding. When George Carlin said "there’s a bigot and a racist in every living room on every street corner in this country" I live by that everyday, less than US, but same in percentage.

As a human, I can definitely say we all need to catch up in spirituality, the personal process and advancement of our morality and ideals is and has been our greatest demise as a species. But, who has time for that, let's all just rape kill, steal, spy and nuke on one another. What I see now is people waiting for that moment to release our inner ugliness, till one day we can all live in George Orwell's vision, when humanity is mentioned, all we see is "a feet stomping on a man's face"

  24. The most important thing here: most of the white people do this thing that drives me literally fucking insane. they have this like, way of dealing with minorities that is subtle but u can tell they're speaking slowly, carefully, and deliberately, trying extra hard not to offend, but with this air of self superiority and entitlement. like you're better than everyone else, somehow of more value, and this is in different ways - white girls in terms of being hit on by minorities act really bitchy, in classroom settings try to hoard power and authority - back it up with some substance and ill respect you. but dont rely on race privelege when it comes down to the shit, cuz im telling u right now - out there, in the jungle, u gotta be quick like me, in the mind and in the body. ill knock you out or beat you at chess, but dont fuck with me and your little mind games cuz i lock on to the nuances of your cold, prickly, distanced, egocentric demeanor, and it disgusts me. i notice, even though you think i don't. i watch jimmy kimmel, bitch

    2. OP here. yeah no, it's all white girls, even the ugly ones, sometimes they're even worse cuz they can just be downright unpleasant. the way they see it, theyre like oh why is this minority better looking than me? im going to use the only remaining power i have, perceived race privelege, to act like a complete asshole to them. trust me, im hot and ugly white people are the most annoying to deal with... especially in group projects

    1. ... but if you're projecting, wouldn't you project onto everything? What's more likely, that your projecting onto everything, or that every white person holds the exact same opinion?

    2. @26.a - If u look at the post, I said "most", not "every." So no, I wouldn't project onto everything, I'd be skeptical until persuaded by all those several hundred instances of it happening, and others telling me about similar experiences. Don't make it seem like I'm saying every single white person holds the same opinion, when that's obviously not what I'm saying - there are exceptions, and alot of them, but remember - they're the exception and not the rule, and by no means the norm for the white race. look at history ifu want more proof, and modern times as well. I mean for christ sake it was like 60 years ago they still had white and black schools and fucking water fountains with labels on them saying "white"

    3. It was also 60 years ago that Germans wanted to kill all Jewish people, but I'm not sure it would be Kosher to claim that as proof that all Germans hate Jews today.

    4. 26c thanks for proving my point. you've just listed another case of white people (in this case, white germans) doing something racist/intolerant, namely killing some sort of minority. one could argue that many jews are also caucasian. but the point to take away is there was still serious white racism going on (towards blacks, asians, arabs, and so on in addition to jews. conveniently u left that out of your lame ass argument)
