QUESTION: I just started working a 9-6 office job to get some admin experience for my resume. and am seriously depressed! How do people cope being in the real world? I am officially a pod person and I'm not sure how long I can take it!

  1. It took me a year and a half to adjust to M-F set schedule where I was mostly required to stay at my desk to do admin/client work. I really struggled having such a huge shift from student life to work-life.

    Some things that helped me:

Make your pod/office feel welcoming and less sterile, I put in plants, hung up some art work, Brought in my favourite mug, a cozy 'work-sweater', etc.

Get out of the office - always take your breaks and leave the building during your lunch hour. Walk. Even if it is raining/freezing outside get out for a walk/run - it makes the afternoon much more bearable (even pleasant!).

If you're social and want to chat put a dish of candies/chocolate on your desk, this will automatically invite people into your space and get to know your workmates.

Smile at people, say hello. Most work environments are bearable because of the relationships you have there.
Make the most of life outside of work, read, play, socialize, cook, go out!

This won't be your last job, it's a means to get to where you want to go, remind yourself of that when things get hard.

It can get better but it's mostly up to you to make it that way - Good luck.

  2. It sounds like you are not in co-op and very likely not in Engineering / CS.

I love the standard 9-5 day in comparison to the number of hours school needs.

    1. I agree. Work terms are my refuge from hell; they're what keeps me sane. Although my hours are usually closer to 10-5, but I digress.

As for OP, try talking to your coworkers and befriending them? It's hard to discern what exactly is causing you to be unhappy with your situation. If it's just being at work for that long, well.... I have bad news for you.

  3. I agree with you, but for all the wrong reasons. My job challenges me so it gets to me sometimes, but if it didnt challenge me, that would be a challenge in it of itself. Paradoxical. If you don't lke what you are doing, convince yourself that you are just using this to get to the next step, whether its a better job, school, what have you.

    Good luck.

    1. Thanks! I think the fact that I'm not being challenged is part of the problem. I know I need to do this to improve my chances of getting my dream job (and pay off some school debt), but it is just super hard to stay positive when I'm so uncomfortable in an office environment.

Thanks again though, I'll have to keep reminding myself it's only temporary :)

  4. I spend my days on reddit and facebook. I can't get in trouble for it either because I can't do anything while running code. My computer gets so slow that I only have a single internet window open because I am scared of crashing it, but still need to stay sane. Some times the current program I am writing will take a few minutes to run, or sometimes it will take a few days. So I can get pretty bored.

    1. Why don't you just use your phone...

    2. I only need one tab open to use reddit, and my phone gets fb notifications
