QUESTION: Why do some companies make you go to Toronto for an interview as opposed to webcam/phone interview?

  1. Shows that if you've made the effort to see them, then you'll make the same effort during the work term.

LOL. I have no idea. Jerks made me bust around $40 just to get rejected. In all honesty though, ask CECA to contact them to set up an alternative way to have the interview. Explain that you don't have the money or time to travel to Toronto. Wish I wasn't so scared of asking last term.

  2. If they think that whether you make the effort to see them is a test on your attitude then you shouldn't be interested in them. Employers and applicants should be equal. This is what I don't like about Waterloo's co-op system - it always feel like that students are begging for jobs.

Last term CECA gave me an interview opportunity (I didn't even apply, the co-op advisor person was helping me to find a job) in Toronto with this pretty well-known researcher. They wanted me to go to Toronto for the interview on a Wednesday afternoon. I had to miss my classes and a lab to bus there and the interview only took 10 min. Of course I didn't get the job because I was kind of pissed at them. lol.

  3. People need to stop acting like Toronto is across the globe.

    1. It is for those that don't own a car and would rather spend time studying than on a bus.

    2. If you have the time to maybe check the greyhound schedule of the bus to Toronto and back, you realize attending an interview in Toronto on an afternoon of a business day will get most of your day wasted. Especially for people who are not from GTA area and don't know their way around the town.

  4. Because your future employer wasn't born in the 90's and actually prefers face to face contact. They also want to know you are seriously invested in being part of their company. There is nothing wrong with requesting an interview time during business hours that does not conflict with your class schedule. Toronto is only 115 km from Waterloo and you can take a bus, car, plane or train to get there. Why wouldn't an employer request you to go in person? This isn't about you, it's about the employer finding the best candidate.

    1. There is no difference between sitting face to face in the same room, and sitting face to face on videoconference.

Maybe you need to join us here in the present, grandpa/ma.

    2. If I have to miss 3 classes to have an interview that I might not get the job, I am not going. They have to realize the good students won't skip class, and they will get offers at other companies not forcing them to miss half a day or more.

    3. @a: You probably never interviewed anyone. There's a huge difference.
