QUESTION: Can someone explain to me this Laurier vs. Waterloo rivalry? Is it a joke because we just are down the street from each other or do people actually consistently argue over which school has more intelligent students and is better overall? I am a graduate student here at Waterloo and did my undergrad at another university and am fascinated at the comments made about each others university. Us joking Laurier is an easy school and Laurier calling us all ugly and having no social skills!

  1. It's honestly all just friendly banter, or supposed to be at least. The people who take it seriously need to borrow a sense of humour.

  2. There really isn't one. Sometimes we say mean things but try to find one university that doesn't ever say mean about another.

  3. Nobody wants to be bottom of the pile for post secondary education in Ontario. So they fight over who is second worst.

  4. It's the typical us versus them bullshit you'll get anywhere. I don't think anyone actually believes in it, and if they do, they're a tool.

  5. What follows contains gross generalization, although it is based on reality; reader discretion is advised.

It looks jokey on the surface, but this hides a pretty bitter rivalry. Waterloo kids really are nerdier; because they've been studying, in preference to socializing, working out, trying to look good, they're not so handsome, nor athletic, nor do they have as good social lives. However, Laurier students aren't necessarily that smart (BUSINESS MAJORS), and on average their graduates won't make as much as UW's STEM students. So each side has a reason simultaneously to envy and to despise the other.

  6. It's worth adding that Laurier deliberately targets a lower level of student than Waterloo. They aim for 70s and 80s students, Waterloo aims for 90s. So there's a genuine difference.

That doesn't actually make Laurier a shitty school (and some of their programs like music are very well-regarded), but it helps explain the cultural differences between the schools.

  7. I think it comes from what we are jealous about. UW is jealous that WLU has more girls, therefore WLU calls us ugly. WLU is jealous that they didn't have the marks to get into UW, so we call them stupid.

  8. It actually goes back to each university's beginning. Laurier and Waterloo used to be one school under the name Waterloo Lutheran University, which handed out degrees through UWO. There was a bit of a kerfuffle when they decided to expand into Engineering, Science Math and Art as a degree-granting university. The Lutheran Synod wanted to be in charge of the Arts faculty, and what was now Waterloo Associate Faculties wasn't having any of it, so they basically split into 2 universities.
This is an oversimplification of what happened of course, but the history of the 2 universities is very fascinating.
