QUESTION: I did really well on a phone screen of a full time interview (selected out of over 20+ candidates), the company is in Ottawa. They want me to find a way to go there, to interview in person before they make their decision. Google says it takes over 8 hours to get there -> I'm fucked. And it has to be a weekday -> extra fucked.
But I believe I'll do good, so, does anyone know the cheapest/fastest/most efficient/least transfers way to go from Waterloo/Kitchener to Ottawa, and get back from there?

  1. Just tell them to fuck off or suggest a skype interview instead. They probably don't care much about their interns if they want them to have to go through this process

  3. Most companies are pretty accommodating with phone or Skype, expecting you to get there in the middle of a school week is ridiculous. Try to see if they'll be willing to Skype instead. Otherwise.. greyhound is cheapest but takes 6-8 hours each way, bussing to Toronto and then flying by Porter airlines from the island airport is fastest but not cheap. Taking the train is somewhere in the middle. Or you could rent a car and drive, but that would still take like 6+ hours.

  4. buses to Ottawa really suck !!

I've traveled back and forth to Ottawa over 30 times using rideshares (kijiji) and never had a problem.

However I recommend asking for a skype interview, or asking for a different date that allows you to come up on your own time.

  5. Porter has reduced ticket prices this month.

  6. Take the train on Sunday (~7h) and fly or drive back Monday night (5h).

  7. I'm shocked an employer would want a student to do that, let alone on a weekday. The farthest I've traveled for a co-op interview was to Burlington and I thought that was bad enough.

  8. Take the train? It's a bit more expensive, but not unreasonable.
Alternatively, you could try offering skype, or meeting halfway. Maybe they would meet you in Toronto or Kingston.
