QUESTION: Which side do you support more in the Fall Reading Break referendum? Personally I'm finding it hard to decide.

For those who don't know it's a choice between:
- Classes start Thursday in the first week of September so that we get two extra days off later in Fall.
- No change.

  1. if laurier is going to continue having their classes start on the first thursday after labour day like this year, then i think it makes sense for waterloo to follow suit so that all those taking classes there don't get all screwed up.
i also think that having 2 extra days (or any extra days) off in the fall are HUGE because i feel that if i had had them (when i was in first-year especially), i would not have been so stressed out and bogged down and would've had more opportunity to breathe.
fall classes for me have always been the hardest.

that said, having classes start on the thursday would perhaps make it difficult for some co-ops who are trying to earn an extra week of pay and make things easier on finances, and i don't think i want it to reduce orientation week either.

it's a tough call to be honest, but i would probably vote yes just to have that vote then say, YES i want a fall reading break in some capacity.
in general though, i feel a different question should have been asked in this referendum.

  2. I hate having a break in the middle of the semester.

  3. It wouldn't really affect me that much, but I'm happy with the way things are right now.

  4. No Change. I'd rather have a longer break between terms.

  5. No fall reading week. I like to travel between terms, and co-op makes it hard to coordinate times around school. Travelling during reading week is too stressful since all I do is study. Those few precious days between terms are my only true, stress-free times, and I'd really hate to lose that. Also, it's hard to get back into going to class, handing in assignments, etc., with an interruption in the middle of the term.

  7. No break - I'd prefer a longer summer. Starting the Thursday before results in a loss of that last weekend, so we'd really be losing 4 days.

  8. No break, that week in September before school starts is great.

  9. Yes to the Fall Reading Week! For me it alleviates the "pressure cooker" effect that happens around that specific time of the year. I have attended another university that had the break, and it worked out beautifully for me in terms of marks. Then again, grades are a priority for me and I realize that is not the case for all students.

  11. Interesting how everyone on this thread is saying "me" and "I." How about considering what's best for the student body as a whole? One of the key issues that comes up when a fall reading week is discussed here on campus is mental health. Sure, losing a couple days of "summer" may disappoint you, but there are many students who would benefit from having an extra couple of days off in the middle of the term. Personally, I'm okay with or without a reading week, but I'll vote for it because I know there are many students on this campus who will benefit, mentally, academically and emotionally, from some down-time.

    1. The question was, "Which side do you support more in the Fall Reading Break referendum?", not "What do you think would benefit the entire campus with regard to the Fall Reading Break referendum?".

    2. I don't think you understand how majority ruling works. If everyone thought like this, there would be an extreme misrepresentation of action opinion.

Have you considered that some people do away with stress during vacations on the breaks between terms? Everyone copes differently. Plus, it's not like you'll get reading week when you start working, so you're going to have to get used to it somehow.
