Most global university "rankings" are flawed, and usually based on aspects such as endowments... which lead to larger endowments and continued position near the top... etc.
They will not kill you, although they may injure you. Generally they'll leave you alone as long as you leave them alone. The scores of students who stop and gawk at them and take pictures and see how close they can get are a big part of the problem. If you were having a picnic and someone came along and started pointing and staring at you and want to take your picture, you'd chase them away with a fork too.
They're annoying but hating/loving/paying attention to them is about the only source of school spirit this place has so I have to give them points for that. I don't think the school ever comes together so intensely for anything but nesting season.
In first year I was in V1 on the top floor and a goose would sit on the roof above my window and honk from about 7am till 9am. So … we did not get off to a good start. I am terrified of them and I wish they wouldn't shit on every inch of grass that we have at UW, however when I see a dead one on the side of the road it makes me sad.
It was annoying in first year res to have a flock of geese in a field outside my window honking. They also crap everywhere which make the paths gross. I would seriously support a 5$ per term/student fee to hire somebody to just go around and power wash the paths. When it is not mating season they are fine though during mating season do not go near them. I had one fly, hiss and bite at me near V1. Non-mating season you can simply act bigger and scare them off but during mating season they are quite mean.
I have had them hiss at me, but I just stare them in the eyes, puff up my shoulders, and take a step towards them. 100% effective at making them back off, even during mating season.
One: we have an archery club???? Damn... done in December and won't get a chance to join :( Two: In the student parking lot across University Ave (C), there's always a tree where geese nest. I was leaving work one evening and I saw the male goose chase a van. Then, probably because it didn't want to fly too far away from its mate, started chasing my car until I left the parking lot.
FUCK THE PO-GEESE
ReplyDeletegentlemen, i give you the reason our school doesn't compare to ivy league schools: there are idiots who actually form thoughts about these things
ReplyDeleteyep. and people that take the time to actually complain and comment on them ;)
DeleteCompare in what, exactly?

Geese are adorable.
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't worried about them damaging my car, I would hit them at full speed whenever I had the chance.
ReplyDeleteThis is a crime. If you don't want them to damage your car, don't drive your car on campus. Everyone else will thank you for it.
Delete4.a: Cause roads are for pedestrians right?
DeleteAnd who said geese are only found on campus? Many times on Columbia I have had to stop or weave through geese.
Deletei will never understand people who can actually develop angry feelings towards an animal of lower intellegence and capability...
ReplyDeleteHave you ever been chased by one of those beasts? They're freaking vicious! They will kill you.

ReplyDeleteA mixture of hate/fear. Damn...that sounds a bit like the roots of racism tbh.

DeleteThat they should be culled. It's an unhealthy population size and they are too dependent on humans.
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to that master's candidate who was chasing them off with a dog as part of his thesis? I liked that idea.
ReplyDeleteWe cool.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought our Archery Club could use them for target practice.

I think they are elegant creatures and a delightful sight for our campus. Less so for their poop, but I think it's not too big a problem.
