QUESTION: How tough is it to get 90+ in science labs like PHYS 111L, CHEM 120L, BIOL 130L, etc.?

  1. For STEM courses, usually less than 5% of the class will get a 90. Keep in mind that everyone in STEM got 90's in highschool.

    1. Well, in some faculties, I doubt everyone of the science kids got 90s in high school

  2. yeah id say very tough, just lots of dull & useless work. how they grade those lab reports is a horrific mystery

    1. protip tho, 0.25 credit grades dont go towards the GPA that med schools (for example) calculate, only 0.5 credit courses taken during full course-load terms

    2. what... don't listen to 2a, lab marks do go into the gpa calculation for med school

  3. It's difficult because they actively try and make sure you don't get 90s. They will dock marks for stupid reasons, and the final exam is designed to drop the average. It's so fucking stupid.

    1. How is that stupid? it shows who really understands the material and who doesn't. Maybe if you understood it more you'd get 90s

    2. ^ that doesn't happen in other science courses, a 90 is fairly attainable, unlike in the first year lab courses. even biol 335L was easier than some of the courses mentioned

    3. 3a here you'll have to forgive my lack compassion I'm from math, where 90's are rarely seen, and most grades hover around 65.

    4. 3 here. It's stupid because they deduct marks that aren't a reflection of understanding. They will deduct marks for really silly nitpicky details that we would have no way of knowing we needed to include. I understand the material very well, and you're not special because you're in math. I'm in math too (bio minor) and I have a 90+ average and it's not that difficult.

  5. CHEM 120L and BIOL 130L can be passed with 90 plus. Just make sure you can write lab reports well for BIOL 130L, and that you do the CHEM 120L lab reports well ahead of time so that you can ask your TA or instructor for help if you don't understand.
