I like it for some things and hate it for others. It's great that I can keep contact with relatives overseas and see what they're up to. On the other hand it feels like people have become a lot more dependent on attention from others. Also things like reddit seem to be telling people what to think instead of inspiring them to think
I love Facebook for international communication and keeping in touch with close family and friends. It's great to see photos of how people are doing and be able to message them for free. I don't like Twitter because to me, it just seems like attention-whoring.
Useful tool if you know how to use them productively. If not they can burn you in ever-increasing ways. I personally don't use them because of past professions I have had years ago regarding personal information. Back in the double degree I warned a classmate about putting their information online and this advice was ignored. Upon one of their posts calling out another person and calling them a bitch I wondered how many co-op placements overlooked this person because they couldn't manage their online profile correctly.
It's great when it's used as a tool, but we haven't learnt how to use it properly yet... ie. we have traded our lives for technology.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't give a shit about facebook but Twitter actually changed my life.

ReplyDeleteGreat....for advertisers.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, people are giving away more information for free than they could ever hope for.
I don't use social media at all for that and a few other security concerns.
That and the amount of time wasted with shallow online interactions.
Giant waste of time.
ReplyDeleteI use email and telephone only and I sworn to stay away from those websites.
