QUESTION: What math courses are good to take as electives? Looking to hear some personal experiences rather than what a website tells me. Help appreciated!

  1. All the non-major level PMATH courses are easy.

    1. 336 is sort of tough but definitely not bad, though when I took it I didn't have much proof experience beyond lin alg

330 is probably the easiest course in the faculty

      331 is easy and interesting

332 might fuck you if the engineering PhD teaches it, he thinks the 55% class average is acceptable (its not, he had no idea what was going on)

  3. Actsc 221, Math 103/104/106/109, CS115/116, AFM 123, Econ 101/102.

Math isn't too difficult for these courses, but as electives you'll get a lot from them.

    1. AFM and ECON aren't math courses, as in they are offered by the Arts faculty, and not Math, i.e they are not considered "math" courses if you take them.

(IMO, Econ 101 and 102 are useless, but 101 even more).

    2. I know, but I thought I'd just throw them out there since there is a bit of math involved in the courses anyways. I wasn't sure if they were interested in something from the math faculty specifically, or just any course where there are some sort of calculations involved.

But yeah, thanks for pointing that out.

  4. Even if you are in third year, math 145 is the bast class to take, ever. If you work, you'll get a 90 and it is the most fun you can have at Waterloo.

  6. I wouldn't recommend actsc 221 if you don't know anything about the financial world like me. I actually had to do a lot of work to understand the material. Otherwise if you have taken high school accounting class or something similar, it should be a breeze

    1. Which prof did you have?

It's all about interest, I think. Also, financial planning is a life skill that we should know. I'd say actsc 221 is a great intro to finance for those who know nothing about it. I'm sure even you would agree that you learn't a lot from it, and putting in effort actually bear fruits in that course!

  8. Math 239, it's really fun. Actually a lot of CO courses are pretty fun, CO 380 is just basically all math contest stuff, 480 sounds really interesting, not really math but more of math history. CO 481 is supposed to be pretty easy and fun, as with the other crypto CO courses.
