QUESTION: Biology students, how did you find BIOL 308 this term?

  1. Horrible.

I had only heard good things about Wolff and since I am doing my Masters in Molecular science in the Fall I was very excited to take it with him. It was one of the worst courses I've taken (and i'm doing fine in it too, not bitter about marks or anything)

He would go off topic and onto rants about ethics in science. He was condescending to any questions. I stopped going to class because I'm not there to hear a rant about ethics.

    1. He knows that he's condescending/sarcastic/cynical. What bugs me is that he just doesn't seem to care! He also comes off as a professor who's been around for a while and very set in his ways.

    2. I took this course in a previous term and he's actually not so bad if you talk to him in his office. He is pretty condescending in class though.

    3. I don't mind Wolff as a person (I like the snarky personality) but I didn't like him as a lecturer. I didn't have it this term, it was several terms ago, but I found he just blazed through the material at breakneck speed and didn't appear to care about it or about communicating it well.

  2. I find it unfair that in Miskovich's class she tests the study questions and Wolff doesn't:(

    1. +1.

And it's unfair that if you don't answer the exact way he expects you barely get any marks. I'm not good at remember diagrams and thrive better at being able to go into detail in text. Too bad for me.

    2. ^ YES! I did poorly on the midterm for this exact reason. He's gotta be more lenient on the grading or make the final easier, right...? :(

    3. I hope so :(. It makes me so mad. Most professors don't expect you to have it word for word what they want and will accept other answers since they don't want you just memorizing exactly what they said. But apparently it's different for him.

I'm hoping he makes the final easier since this was "the lowest" he's ever seen the midterms for his class

  3. I managed to get through all the slides and create study notes. Never realized how disorganized the slides were (which explains why I felt lost in some lectures). Also the amount of material in this course is what's challenging, not the material itself.

I got a 60% on the midterm.. hoping to stay around there after the final.

  4. Are you kids serious? Took it 2 years ago with Miskovic. While she is an empress of all that is evil, the course was pretty easy. Get your heads out of yr asses people, if 308 is hard then how do u even survive biology..

    1. 1 here. I'm not saying it's hard, I'm saying that Wolff is presenting it in a stupid manner. Every class I went to he would go into a rant about biological ethics. I'm sorry but I'm here to learn about molecular, not to hear your opinion on what's right or not.

    2. While I haven't taken 308, I can vouch that Wolff is pretty horrible. I had him for 303 and I couldn't believe how horrible he was at teaching. He rambled, was completely unorganized and didn't make sense a lot of the time. I promise I'm not saying this just for the purpose of giving him a bad name, I got a good mark in the class but it was only because I worked my ass off with the textbook.

    3. Amen. That's how I'm getting through 308. I would say that he is definitely knowledgeable on the material but he rambles too much. He is so obsessed with biological ethics it actually makes me angry.

  5. @5: You're a fucking clown. You had it easy cause the entire course is study questions with Miskovic.

  6. A couse heavy material paried with a really bad prof can make a couse x10 harder than it should be. I got an 80 on the midterm based on pure memorization from study notes/slides because I do not understand anything he's trying to teach.
