QUESTION: I need a science elective - PHYS 122 versus PHYS 256 versus BIOL 239.
Alright, so I've taken ECE 105 and 106 before (which are basically the same thing as PHYS 115 and 116 for engineering). I haven't taken any physics since then. I found ECE 105 pretty easy since there wasn't any real calculus required to understand the material. ECE 106 was tougher due to the addition of calculus.
Now I know 122 is for science majors and you can only take 256 if you've taken 122. I need some opinions on 256. It's not a popular course. I'm looking for the easier one. Easy as in: you just plug numbers into some formulas.
BIOL 239 - Obviously very different from the 2 physics courses. I hear it requires tons of memorization and participation in tutorials = easy marks but the fact that they are mandatory = ick. I'm actually ok with memorization but I'm pretty sure I'd do better with one of the physics courses since they're just math. Can someone who has taken this as well as one of the other physics courses comment on which course required more work.
take phys, the bellcurve will ride u to 90+ if ure any good at physics
ReplyDelete239 will be a bitch, good luck climbing over 80
(taken both)
lol thanks.
DeleteBIOL 239 Tutorials were annoying as hell
ReplyDeletePHYS 256 is fun, but if you haven't done much physics and you're not used to problem solving that way (some profs expect more from you than others), I wouldn't take it.
ReplyDeletePHYS 122 is pretty easy if you did well in grade 12 physics, but some high schools do a really shit job teaching it..so, if you're school was good, you'll have no problems. There's a lot of plug-and-chug, but you can't just turn your brain off entirely. The math is not hard, you probably won't even have to use much or any calculus.
BIOL 239 was fun. If you're interested in the type of material, it's not going to feel like much work.
OK. I prefer the topics in 256 compared to 122. I've heard that Scholtz (who always teaches 122) isn't easy. I do well with physics, I just haven't done it in awhile.
DeleteHmm, yeah, I don't know too many people who liked 122 with Scholz (he was great when I had him for a different course). He loves to help if you've got questions, so if you take 122, I highly recommend actually talking with him and often.
DeleteNo clue who's doing 256, but I know students outside of physics took it when I did. If you really want to, go for it, but there's a chance you'll get a tough prof or an easy one. They're always nice though, so if it is a hard prof, don't neglect going to class and office hours.
Hmm ok. yeah i ended up preenrolling in 256, this new prof Kyung Soo Choi is teaching it (couldnt find him on RateMyProfs). I plan to just switch to 122 if he see,s like a hard ass. :)
Deletefyi you can get an override to substitute the phys 122 prerequisite requirement with ece 105
ReplyDeleteOP here. yeah, i didnt need to since i just took the ece version (ece 404). i just used phys 256 in this post since it's more well known.
Deletephys 122 is pretty easy (i got really great marks all the way until the final) but Scholz's final exam is fucked.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you're allowed to take both ECE 106 and PHYS 122.
ReplyDeleteyeah, lol, it's kind of weird but they allow it because the material is still slightly different i believe.
