And personally I don't believe we shouldn't because unlike smoker we can't hide that we're fat and because chastising someone because they are fat can be very detrimental to a person. You end up hating yourself, and yes, sometimes that will force people to lose weight, but from what I've seen when people lose weight because of body image issues, it doesn't actually help them become healthier instead it forces them to lose weight for the wrong reasons with the wrong methods and at the end of the day they may just end up gaining all the weight and more back. You're much better off promoting a healthy life, trying to get them involved in physical activities and introducing them to go tasting healthy food.
You are just saying that because you are a fatass. I was a fatass, I started working out and eating healthy and finally became normal and healthy and possibly fitter than average.
My cousin calling me "Homer Simpson" and friends picking on me helped me get motivated to do it.
Its good to chastise fattasses because it forces them to change
1 here. I did say it can help some people get motivated like it did in your case. And I'm saying that as someone who has lost a good percentage of their body weight twice in their life. Once because of teasing and bullying because of my weight and once because I wanted to get healthier. First time was because of the bullying and instead of being healthy and happy after losing the weight, I had years of self esteem issues which I ended up eating my way through. On the other hand, when I lost weight because I wanted to be healthy again, I managed to lose 40 pounds (which was about 20% of my body weight at the time and I gained muscle in the process) and kept it most of it off for 2 years and only really gained it back when I was tormented about my weight because I still wasn't stick thin, even though I was healthy. So yes, call me a fatass, but that's not my motivation for wanting to get healthy again.
Btw, I'm happy for you because you got healthy. I wish you could use your story as an inspiration for people to lose weight instead of belittling them to boast your own ego and accomplishments.
No. Being fat is not a choice. There's a huge biological component you have no control over. Some people are naturally skinny no matter how many calories they consume, and others are naturally heavier.
I'm certain of this. I had a friend in high school that danced 30 hours a week and ate super healthy all the time. She was still significantly overweight.
Fuck off 2, there is like 0.1% of people from whom it is is an actual biological issue which they cannot help. For the other 99.9% of people it is is a choice.
Lol 2 you realize its not no matter how many calories right? Like 2a said, if you have a caloric deficit you lose weight. End of story. This only is a biological problem when people get basal metabolic rates of like 500kilocalories and would need to choose between getting all their macro and micro nutrients and getting a caloric deficit. This is extremely rare. Most people (myself included) eat too big portions and go over what they need and fill up on empty calories.
Do I have friends that eat the same sort of food I do and gain less weight? Yes... That doesn't mean my extra body fat isn't my fault.
2, if you can show that people can consume less calories than they expend, and still gain weight, enjoy your nobel prize for disproving the current laws of thermodynamics.
You have control over calories in. You *don't* have control over calories out. As you may know, if you starve yourself you can often *gain* weight. When you eat food, your body extracts only about 30% of the available energy. It can adjust that rate based on circumstance, and it's not a constant for everyone.
Additionally, "calories" is an incredible oversimplification of the digestive and metabolic process. Eating certain foods together is going to be far easier on your body than eating each by themselves, etc. It's a complicated process. For instance, iron absorption is significantly impacted by concurrent vitamin C intake. Plant iron is considered more digestible than that in meat. If you eat egg whites without egg yolks, your body doesn't get all the nutrition and enzymes in the yolks that help to digest the whites. 100 calories of 2% milk vs. 100 calories in coke have significantly different digestive pathways, and the latter is going to be harder on your liver and spike your blood sugar. Etc. Etc.
Food science is extremely complicated. This bullshit "calories in calories out" oversimplification seems to be the sole domain of engineers and the like that know nothing about biology, but this sounds logical to them based on their understanding of thermodynamics so it MUST BE THE TROOF. No. It's an excuse to bully people over their weight, and it's extremely mean-spirited. Because if these people can justify being fat as "a choice", they can justify that fat people have "chosen" to receive harassment and bullying in return. So disgusting.
2f: except I know a huge number of people who eat super healthy and are very active who you would probably call fat, and I also know a huge number of gross slobs that are nonetheless rather skinny, who never gets off the couch, you'd call "healthy".
It's not a choice. It's an excuse for you to justify your prejudices and bullying. You are being a bad person. Fuck off.
All the dicks on here please watch this then give yourselves a big pat on the head for being born with genetics that are currently held in high esteem. You've really accomplished so much...
I do think that obese people are gross (like physically repulsive) but then again the same could be said about super thin people, or people of a certain race, or people from a certain place, or....you see where I am going.
It affects me in three ways. Allow me to list them.
1. It looks unpleasant. It is like seeing someone with burns, only this is something they can fix and that they are responsible for, unlike burns. I get that shiver up my spine thing when I see someone who is huge.
2. It makes me feel ashamed for North America. Everyone always says we are so hugely obese in NA. It makes me feel like we are somehow inferior to those across the pond.
3. Being fat is suffering. Your body is working itself into a spasm just to support you. I do not like to see people suffer; I have empathy. I want everyone to be at least somewhat healthy.
Second hand smoke risks are vastly over-blown. Smelling some tobacco smoke outside on your walk isn't going to harm you as much as the particles in the air you breath every day.
Correct, 4b. If we lived in a country with private health care, believe me, I would be fully behind a "do what you want it is your body" attitude. No motorcycle helmets? Sure! Obese? Great!
But since some of my money is going to keeping you going it falls under my purview.
I think this is a very slippery slope because unlike smoking where people either smoke or not, people's body sizes are more complex. Do you shame someone for being 100 lbs overweight? 50lbs? 10lbs? Are you making the distinction between people who are active and eat healthy, but happen to not have a thin body type and people who are just fat and unactive? What about the few who are honestly trying, but still struggle with their weight due to medical conditions?
I think people who are overweight do experience enough shame in our society anyway, and a few more assholes fat-shaming isn't going to have much of a long-term effect.
I'll wont chastise a friend who is below 25% body fat, but over that, you are getting called a fatass not only by me but by everyone (if not face to face, probably behind your back)
And besides if because of my teasing you, you try to become healthier, it will make you better. You will get opposite sex attention, you will live longer...
So yea go call that tubby next to you a fat piece of shit
Seriously, why do you need to tear someone down because of their weight, how does that benefit you or them. If you really want to help a friend be healthy, involve them in athletic activities, eat healthy food together, be a good person. How the hell does insulting someone make the world a better place.
You cant just involve a fatass in going for a trip to the gym with you. You have to tell him to get off his fat lazy ass and watch what he stuffs in his mouth and get some workouts in
There is not reason to have to delete this thread. People are speaking their mind on a huge problem in our society.
8, you seem like "everyone is beautiful in their own way" type. That's fucking bullshit. Fat is disgusting, and there is not reason that somehow NEEDS to be overweight. It's not attractive, it's not healthy, and it's a problem. Fat people are not 'beautiful' in any physical respect.
While you're at it, delete half of this website... Seriously though, the answers on this thread are incredibly hurtful. It makes me ashamed of UW. I really hope no media outlet finds this website and links it to the university.
^ above comment is a complete strawman. I've experienced enough racism/fat-shaming/anti-semitism/misogyny on this site to demonstrate otherwise. I've never encountered anything but an appeal to stereotypes. That's not "the truth".
It is hurtful because you are engaging in BULLYING. You are being mean to people for the sake of being mean to people and trying to justify it with pseudoscience, feigned concerned for their wellbeing, and personal interests.
I mean, this is beyond asshole. Some of this stuff in here could easily set someone off cutting. I know it would have for me when I was depressed. And you assholes with not a drop of empathy would probably laugh at achieving your desired affect! Like WTF?! It is sadistic. It's just *mean*, it adds absolutely no value whatsoever. You should be ashamed of yourself, seriously.
Since y'all seem like a bunch of redditeurs: what would Mr. Rogers say if he saw you behaving like this?
If you find this so offensive (its not by the way, you being subjectively offended doesnt mean that thing is objectively offensive)... why keep coming back?
Surely there are other places less hateful than here... but it seems to be your favourite place to hang out. Maybe you want people to hate, because YOU need ammo to victimize yourself with
If you're going to post here expecting all support and cheerfullness, DONT. go post in a support group. if you want the actual opinions of people then come here.
A question to those of you who said yes, do you also support similar treatment for people who are doing poorly in school? I think a lot of you forget that most overweight people don't want to be overweight, and that saying its all due to laziness is grossly simplifying it. If your friends are at risk of failing out of school do you all just call them pieces of shit and tell them they're a waste of space and resources or do you encourage them to seek help and try to support them?
If it isn't obvious I don't think that fat people should be chastised in the same manner as smokers, because fat people don't pose the same risk to you that smokers do (i.e second hand smoke). I do think though that exercise and maintaining a healthy diet are things we should encourage more in western society.
Well if you're doing poorly in school its because a) you're trying and just not getting it, or b) you're slacking (which you would know) and so don't give a shit. I am the latter of the two and so if you made fun of me i wouldn't give a shit. If I were the former, then obviously theres a problem but i'm at least TRYING. Honestly, i've lost 10-15lbs in 3 months during my 1B term and it was because I put in effort and did physical activities. If you TRY to lose weight, you will as long as you don't half ass it and smother your face with food continuously. As mentioned previously, theres a very very small percentage of people that biologically cannot do it. For the rest it is lack of trying
But we already said that fat people cost me money because of their immense strain on the healthcare system. Not to mention, some people are less intelligent than others; if you're playing with a deck that's a bit lighter you aren't going to do so well. But a vast majority of massive humans just eat shit food in quantities suitable for small families.
People smoke all the time on campus. . Noone gives them shit for it. There are a lot of fat people on campus, i never see anyone give them shit for it. This is their business so shut the fuck up about it you useless morons.
I'm thin (well, people think im thin) and extremely unfit. I have friends who excersize regularly and eat less than I do who could be considered thick. If I had their metabolism I be might be obese. So chill your grillz people. The focus should be on health not appearance.
We already do and sometimes even worse then smokers.
ReplyDeleteAnd personally I don't believe we shouldn't because unlike smoker we can't hide that we're fat and because chastising someone because they are fat can be very detrimental to a person.
