QUESTION: ARTS students, is ARBUS worth it? I've heard a few people say that most courses at are useless, especially the '00 levels.

STEM, I don't give a shit about your opinion if you're gonna bash Arts.

  1. I wasn't going to say anything, but since you decided to take a shot, I will too.

If you go into ARBUS, you can become a shift manager at starbucks instead of just a barista!

    1. He said IF you are going to bash Arts. And now you did bash arts..
And to answer his original question... please see above response. But in all seriousness, arts could get you to law school if you are determined

  2. Current arbus student here.
Depends. if you are looking for an actual business business program then no, stay away. i havent found much of the arbus courses helpful; everything is very touching the surface of a little bit of everything. the 100% arbus courses (as a lot are cross listed with econ, afm...) are useless; i say you're better off taking the business finance courses (if thats what you want to do) as electives.
arbus is hella restricting if you want to do a major & minor since the courses are offered in specific times.

if you dont mind sticking it through a bunch of group work projects (which could be fun if your group is good) and a bunch of fluffy courses then i guess it looks better than just graduating with just "arts"? idk, if you're tkaing this just for the coop then its not worth. head for something else. even the scibus courses are more useful than arbus.

i say really look at the kind of courses the double degree kids are taking at laurier and compare the courses with the arbus mandatory courses and the other x & business courses. you can def see the lack of substance in arbus especially

    1. pretty sure we're the only x& business program that has to take business ethics when everyone else is taking like OB or BusLaw lol

  3. I'm in 2B ARBUS (after I come back from Coop). 2 is totally right on many fronts, and ARBUS' worth is totally dependent on what you want. Do you want an actual business degree? DO NOT do ARBUS. But would you like a bit of context with your Econ degree? By all means, ARBUS Is definitely a good complement.

I've noticed that there are a few more job options on Jobmine when you select ARBUS, but when you actually look at the job, the requirements make it blatantly obvious that they're more for FARM/AFM/Math students. So that's something to consider as well.

As for useless courses.... I don't know, I've always subscribed to the belief that there's no such thing as complete uselessness. I've learned something in every class I've taken (though it's undeniable that I've learned more in some classes over others), but 2 is so right in saying that many only "touch the surface".

Personally, I like ARBUS and I feel like it's a good complement to my joint honours (Economics & RPW). But ARBUS is definitely not for everyone-- if you're considering it, really think about what you want and what you're looking for.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

    1. FWIW, you do not need to be in any ARBUS course to select ARBUS on Jobmine, and frankly most employers don't care as long as you have the skills.

  4. The true artists are in AFM.

  5. As a STEM major, I hate when my barista is in ARBUS because they always seem to have a chip on their shoulder when they serve me. Just my two cents (that's a tip for you servers! :) )

    1. Do you always personally go around asking baristas which major they're in?
