QUESTION: To try to lose weight I have started eating healthier and biking everywhere instead of driving or busing. My weight isn't changing at all. What else can I do? I feel that if I starve myself any further I won't have the energy to bike or be active. Don't need to lose too much, just have a spare tire and a little extra on my thighs that I need to get off. I am male.

  1. Track your calories religiously. Calories in < calories out = weight loss. You can't target areas for weight loss, so just lose body fat overall and hope for the best. Eating healthier doesn't mean shit if you still eat a lot of healthy foods. Find a calorie tracking app and use it.

  2. Depends on how committed you are to your goal

    Track everything.

Have you heard of the ABC diet?

  3. Brah, you gotta commit to that shit, changes won't happen over night. Weight fluctuates daily (i can go anywhere from 230-240 in one day from eating/water weight retention), but no matter dawg what's important is that it's not your weight you should be worried about but bodyfat, if all you're doing is stepping on a scale it's likely it won't change. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat, and biking is a really intense leg workout (like, your largest muscle group) so it's no surprise that if you gain muscle there while losing fat. your weight won't change.

  4. Be honest about the amount of calories you are consuming.

I helped a fat friend lose a bunch a weight and the main thing stopping progress was not being honest about the amount of calories in the meals they were eating, and neglecting to include the many snack they had consumed.

Also be realistic about the amount of exercise you are doing. 10 minutes on the bike is not much exercise. You need to get out there and get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes.

  5. OP here:
Currently at 196, lost 10 pounds in May, none since then.

From what you 4 have said so far:

I think my biggest issue is drinks. I rarely have water with meals, usually milk or juice. I could probably replace the juice with water, I love my milk, hoping to not give it up. When eating on campus (all my lunches, and some dinners) I sometimes get pop, going to cut it out completely. What can I get on campus/plaza that is healthy?

    ABC=Anything But Carbs??

@3 My legs are definitely stronger, but I don't think it would be enough to make me not lose weight. I can go up the big hills on Columbia by Westmount with only being slightly out of breath now when at the start of June I would be panting.

    1. Good.

      Now do it fast.

The waterloo cycling club is an excellent resource as well, but you will need to be riding a half decent road bike to participate.

  6. cardio..lots and lots of cardio + weight lifting. make sure your heart rate is at 60-80% of your max heart rate. so take your age, subtract from 220 and that's your max heart rate.

    1. Pretty sure that formula is inaccurate.

    2. Found a site: http://www.digifit.com/heartratezones/maximum-heart-rate.asp?Age=22#table

Don't know how accurate it is, but has several calculation methods

  7. Stop eating unprocessed shit. Eat a ton of veggies and protein (it's hard to eat a fuckton of protein unlike carbs). Don't do fad diets (shit like low carb may work for some ppl but I find it totally trashes my mood and performance). Don't starve yourself. Eat when you feel hungry. Don't binge...and yeah...

    1. You meant...processed food...right?
No, Johnny, in order to achieve max gains you must eat all the McDonalds!

    2. No, I meant unprocessed food obviously. Didn't you read the rest of the sentence Bobby?

  8. The ABC "diet" is BS. Completely cutting carbs is also BS. Pretty much anything that uses the words diet in the sense "do not consume X" is BS.

Log your consumption, you might be eating way more than you think, especially if you're biking a lot.
For best results you want to do HIIT cardio and a lot of lifting.

    3. ABC could also refer to the "Ana Boot Camp" diet. Just an FYI.
It's definitely not healthy, but its likely effective.

Its an extreme low calorie diet normally lasting 50 days. It contains 5 fast days during which the dieter is strictly not allowed to consume any calories. The rest of the days allow between 100-800 calories to take in

You're suppose to consume 0 - 500 cals every day on their schedule for 30 days.

  9. ^ Why the fuck do they not call this starvation? This "diet' sounds beyond anorexic...

  10. only sure fire way: count calories (and dont account for calories burned thru exercise.. the estimates are way off)
