Some do. Advisors probably do, but not all profs do. Profs are in the job they have because they want to do research, not because they want to teach. They are hired because of their research, no one cares how well they teach. I am not saying that all profs hate students, just that they don't have to.
I find that lowly front line workers or secretaries, people you see and are familiar with, "care" about you. But that advisor who you only exist to as a number in a database don't.
I've met some advisors who do it because they like working with students and some who seem to do it because the department told them to do it.
I've had professors who really seem to enjoy teaching and some who seem to do it because it's required. There's professors who go above and beyond and participate in departmental / faculty events and take the chance to get to know their students. There's others you feel like you're wasting their time by approaching them.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. But I think OP asks a loaded question -- I've had profs who don't give a shit about teaching/students who I still learned a lot from.
DeleteAnd conversely there are the profs who genuinely do care, yet still are not especially educational.
DeleteI think it really depends from person to person. I've met plant ops people who were nice, but others who were jerks, similar in almost any role.
ReplyDeleteI think the majority of them do care
ReplyDeleteSome of them really care, some of them, it's just a job.
ReplyDeleteThe trick is finding the staff that do care and going to them for help if you need it.
who cares
ReplyDeleteon average, the time you spend interacting with them on a level that counts is pretty much 0 hours a week
depends on which prof
ReplyDeletealso depends on which student
most of my profs like me a fair bit

ReplyDeletemy profs definitely care, depends on class size and whether or not oyu ask quesitons
ReplyDeleteyeah, from registrar's office workers, to [biology] profs, to janitors that will have a chat with ya when you're doing labwork at 11pm on a friday
ReplyDeleteA lot more than other students from what I've seen. It's kinda weird how that works...
