QUESTION: Does chem 266 (orgo chem) have participation mark that you have to be present in class for?

  1. They use TopHat in class for participation, but it is optional. However, TopHat costs money to purchase and unfortunately wasn't that cheap ( I can't remember the exact amount) but it did have extra practice questions that could be done. There was also another membership that could be purchased (I forget the website) that had weekly assignments you could do To reduce your exam weight. I think the two memberships cost about $50 together.

  2. Why would you skip organic lectures?

Plus Forsey tends to teach that course and he is a fantastic prof.

  3. You would only get 10% of the weight transferred by paying $60 for top hat and sapling. The questions that he asks from top hat are put into the course notes along with the multiple choice answers so you just circle the answer and write down any notes/explanations into the course notes. I thought that paying $60 was ridiculous when it only would have saved 10% and they could just have easily used iClickers as he only ever used it for the multiple choice questions. I hated this course and I didn't particularly like the prof, Forsey is a nice enough person but he is shitty at explaining things. Save yourself the trouble and buy the organic model kit for $20 as it will help you to understand things far more than top hat will.

    1. ^ Agreed. Buy the model kit, don't buy tophat. And definitely GO TO CLASS.

    2. I'd wait to buy the model kit because some people are able to visualize the compounds without the need for it.

  4. You are an idiot if you think you will get a good mark in orgo without going to class. It's your funeral.

  5. The TopHat participation can be completed outside of class before the professors close the questions done in class.

However, it's highly suggested to go to class. Organic chemistry is definitely not an easy course for everyone and really needs to be kept up with. Falling behind in this class is detrimental to the rest of the course content - the concepts build onto each other.

Forsey is a great prof, but sometimes his explanations are not that great. The textbook is a great resource. I used to the textbook completely for Chem 267 when I didn't like Monica's course notes and ended up doing very well, so the textbook is probably great for Chem 266 as well.
