QUESTION: I'm planning on applying to be a residence don on main campus in the spring. Any past summer dons with advice or words of wisdom?

  1. best way is to have connections, but since you are asking this then you probably don't have any... so just be really friendly and talkative almost to the point of being obnoxious. Good luck!

  2. Hey! I'm a current summer don. My thoughts:

    1) Define what success would mean to you as a don. This is very important- know what you want to accomplish, and why you want to do so.

    2) Now that you understand what you need to do, understand how you will become a successful don. Understand your own value proposition- what are your unique traits which you'll bring to the team, and how will those traits allow you to succeed (under your own definition of success)?
Dons are the most diverse people I've ever met on campus (in terms of many things- program, age, gender, race, sexuality, background, experiences, etc.) and it's awesome. Don't think there is any 'mold' you need to fit to be successful.

    3) You do not necessarily have to be talkative. Friendly, yes- fake, no. I am quite introverted and was relatively quiet during the interview process.

    4) Attend an info session! There are usually 1 or 2 info sessions held in SLC for students to drop by and ask questions about the Don and Front Desk Assistant roles. You'll learn a lot more about the process, and the position.

Applications should open in September, keep checking https://uwaterloo.ca/housing/jobs-leadership/paid-positions/dons. Good luck! :)

  3. Shameless thread jack attempt: Should you tell employers that you have other interviews that day. Will that make them look more favorably on you?

    1. They won't care.

I bombed an interview because it was right after a brutal physics exam and the interviewers gave no fucks

    2. ^won't it make you seem more valuable if more companies after potentially after you. Supply and Demand and all that.

    3. Should you tell girls that you've been flirting with other girls that day. Will that make them look more favorably on you?

No. It makes you look desperate if you have to say it outright. If you have traits that make you desirable, they'll know regardless of whether you tell them.

  4. Ignore 2, be as fake as possible and you'll get the job. "Know what you'd like to accomplish?" Please... know you'll be making rice crispy squares and sitting in pointless meetings most nights. That's what you'll be accomplishing.

    2. Hahaha, housing consistently fucks up hiring. You'll learn this quickly if you get hired when you realize you're surrounded by dumbasses.

I'm with 4, bullshit and appeal to your interviewers. Those meetings are fucking pointless.
