QUESTION: Saw a question about cheapest place to get an oil change, but what about the best? I drive hard, and I need an oil change in a thousand or so kilometres, so I want the best oil they have. Does more expensive oil even make a difference in anything?

  1. Dude wtf, there's no way you need an oil change this early, no matter how 'hard' you drive. Don't change more often than you need to, you'll just wear out the oil pump.

    1. I have already been driving a while on my current oil, the sticker on the windshield says in 1000km from my current mileage. But how would getting new oil often wear out the oil pump???

1000km will probably be in a couple weeks

  2. The place doesn't matter, it's the oil you use. Get some good synthetic (royal purple), jack your car up, loosen the oil drain pan plug, drain the oil, change the filter, fill the car up, boom you're done in 10 minutes.

Also you don't need an oil change after 1000km. If your oil is low, then you're leaking or you're burning oil. If the oil is black/brown then that's a different story. You probably change your spark plugs every year right? pfft. Useless over maintenance.

    1. I am guessing you are 3a. I feel safer taking it to a shop to get the oil changed, I don't want to fuck up a $40k car. Thanks though!

    2. You can literally take it anywhere then. There are a ton of places along University. Just don't get suckered into things they say you "need".

    3. Watch a youtube video to show you how to do it yourself, or ask a friend to teach you. It's actually pretty simple and unless you're retarded you won't fuck up the car.

  3. Pretty sure he meant in 1000km from now, not every 1000 km....

    1. ahhhh my mistake. I'll clarify then. Do some research on oils (conventional vs synthetic) and then decide based on your car. If it's been using conventional for 150k, it's probably a bad idea to switch to synthetic. I personally use Castrol GTX conventional oil. Mobil1 and Royal Purple are good synthetics. And for the love of god don't get a FRAM filter.

    2. Thanks 3, yes, that is what I mean. My parents gave me their car and now I have to do everything on my own, and don't want to go ask them for help.

3a. If you are right, I guess I will have to ask my parents what they have been using

  4. You might want to post the year make and model of vehicle and it's mileage as that might help some of the experts.

I don't know of the cheapest place for an oil change, there is a new 10 minute lube on university at Weber I believe? A real good Mr Lube location is on King st by the Home Depot in Waterloo, they are "car guys" which is rare for one of those places. They still hard sell you and you need to do the following and that is check your fluids, oil, transmission fluid, radiator coolant overflow jug, washer fluid, tire pressure and set it according to the sticker in the door jamb, check your engine and in cabin ari filter, and then go for your oil change and ask for a lube oil and filter and nothing else. They will try and upsell you and lie to you, that's how they get their commission.

So after you've done your checks and all fluids and pressures are good you can go there and simply demand an oil change.

I use mobile 1 synthetic and OEM filter, every 5000km I have the oil change done, my vehicle has 953,000km on it.

and don't drive it "hard"....don't drive it like an old church lady either but the cops give a lot of tickets here and you really don't want to jump the timing chain or timing belt and you do want to save on gas right? Keep those RPM's down, the lower your RPM's at any speed the more fuel you save.

Synthetic engine oil and transmission fluid all the way, you can get longer intervals that 5000 km with synthetic as well, I happen to change every 5000 but you can go longer.

    1. if OP has been using conventional for the life of the vehicle for a long period, switching to synthetic and the detergents in it will break down all the gunk that's probably holding the seals and gaskets in place. Unless OP wants oil leaks, stick to whatever they've been using.

    2. I like to accelerate hard, rpm frequently go over 5k, and sometimes nearing 7k. my red line is at 8k i think (I never go into the red). The car says I use 14.5L/100km, which is fine with me, I am having fun. I don't speed by too much, never had the cops around here give me a second look. (Up north I got a stare down from a cop who knew I was speeding, but couldn't prove it)

My parents had their mechanic check out everything back in April, so I only have to deal with the oil apparently.

    3. 5k is an nothing for synthetic ... it is myth from the 60-70th. Don't listen to the idiots from Mr Lube. I change every 15k with synthetic as per honda manual. 1996 civic 350k on it.

  5. I'd definitely recommend getting organic, grain fed, range grown oil. Also try to make sure its extra virgin, not just virgin. You don't want some slutty oil getting all up in your gears. You want oil that is lube, not oil that uses lube.

  6. OP, are you going to call a tow truck to help you change your tire if you get a flat on the highway? No? Then be a man and learn how to change your own oil and learn something about your car. Why would you trust some tool that's always looking to rip people off with cheap oil and shitty filters.
