Tattoos make no fucking sense to me. I can't think of a single design that would last the test of time for the rest of my life. Like, why do you need this on your skin forever? My sister said she wanted a daffodil because it "was grandma's favorite flower". Or.. you could just buy daffodils when they're in season. It's not like you're going to forget, so why display it on your skin forever?
I mean, if I was Maori or something, it would be a different story, but I don't get the appeal of a butterfly on my ankle or a huge decal across my chest or w/e. Usually looks tacky.
Meh, if people want them, it's their body. Plenty of reasons to (rite of passage, in memory of a special person/event, just plain aesthetic), but none of them really appeal to me either. Some people like the idea of permanence and being able to keep that image as near to them as possible. Can't really trash that without sounding like a jerk..
It might be the demographics of the Waterloo population. I'm not sure how popular tattoos are with international students versus Canadian students. It might also have to do with our status as a coop school. Students might want to present themselves as more clean-cut to employers when applying to jobs and either don't have them or have them in places easily concealed by clothes.
I have seen lots of tattoos on campus. I have two large-ish tattoos and they are visible often due to placement and how cold it has been this year. Wait for the hot weather.
i'm originally indian, i'm in science- and i have two tattoos- one below my collarbone, and one on my ankle. i also have 2 ear piercings on each ear and a nose piercing. us tattooed folk are definitely out there.
I definitely think it has to do with that token phrase everyone who wants a tattoo hears: "but how are you going to get a job with that??" I'd say 90% of my university friends have tattoos, but they're all in discrete places in case their job doesn't allow them. Even mine, which is really big and on my arm, is only visible in short sleeves and the weather has only permitted that recently.
I guess it's the type of people that go here? I mean, it makes sense if you consider the kind of person more likely to get a tattoo.
ReplyDeleteWhat does that mean? What kind of person is most likely to get a tattoo?
Delete@1.a - white people

DeleteI have a few tattoos and piercings. I don't really like hanging around campus though, so that explains why you haven't seen me.

I've got a full leg sleeve, and I'm on campus all the time! But pants have been a necessity due to weather, but I wear shorts whenever I can!
ReplyDeleteif you're the guy i'm thinking of - I like your kneecap. It's very pretty.
