I used to study in the libraries, but I am really annoyed by minor noises, and I get angry when people do rude things like chew with their mouth open and talk loudly/leave their phone on loud while in the silent section (these things have nothing to do with race, people from every race do this).
Anyways I was getting too distracted by all of the noises, and getting riled up about how inconsiderate people are when I studied in the libraries, so now I just study at home.
I am white and I just prefer to study at home. I have a dog, so I can't be away from home for long periods of time anyways, and its nice to take her on walks during my study breaks.
When I used to study at DC it was always a majority of non-white people. Most of the white people I know study at home, but most of my asian/brown friends study in the library.
A lot of my friends that study in the library live at home with their parents, and don't like studying at home because their families are distracting so maybe there is a higher proportion of people who aren't white that live at home with their families?
IDK thats my guess based on anecdotal observations.
I can attest to this. I'm white and so are most of my friends, among them (about 6-7 people) I seem to be the only one who takes studying and school seriously. Even though we usually end up in some of the same courses, the only times they really want to "study" together is right before exams. It can be pretty frustrating.
Its because MC is directly connected to DC. And because MC is the math building, it only equals up to a lot of non-white people. Not to mention its close to the bus stops.
Don't know about race but the library, especially DC, is horrible during finals- terribly crowded, basically a suicide mission if you want to find a place to sit. Also, I can't sit in one place for too long. I do like studying there and working on assignments when it's not finals, less distracting then studying at home.
I'm white and I study at home because I drink a lot of coffee and don't want to have to pay for it on campus. Also find there are fewer distractions in my room, I have a lot of space to spread things out, and I really don't like carrying my computer around because I'm sure that at some point it's going to get dropped.
I'm asian and I study at home. I eat a lot and I don't want to distract other people/pack a ton of food. I also can't stand the smell of old coffee/food, dirty desks and dirty chairs.
I'm white and I always study at home. Libraries are too loud, even the "silent" sections, and they're crowded. Plus food on campus is shitty and expensive. Going to the bathroom is awkward if you want to keep your spot, but not have your stuff stolen. As well it's a pain to drag all of my study material to school and back everyday when I could just take what's necessary for classes, and keep all of my study stuff at home.
No, we're scared so we study at more 'white friendly' places...Like Starbucks! ;D
ReplyDeleteI'm white and I study in the library. Usually DP.
ReplyDeleteI have to say though, I was in DC library today and eek, talk about minority ...

ReplyDeleteWhite people (on average) don't study as much. That's why so many Asians are here (or at U of T, or Harvard).
ReplyDeleteSounds racist but is true -- cultural differences really

ReplyDeletewe do but we are very outnumbered
ReplyDeleteI'm a white female and used to study in DC at least 8 hours a day because I had 2-3 online courses. I can definitely say I was a minority.
ReplyDeleteDo you study in DC or DP, because it makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteMaybe its just an accurate cross-section of the people at this University?
