QUESTION: Why is VIA rail so expensive? What makes the company think that I would take the train when it takes me either the same or a lower amount to take a plane? Europe and Asia rely on trains so much and they relatively cheaper there. What kind of people run VIA rail.

  1. Actually, country hopping is cheaper in Europe when done by cheap regional flights than by train.

  2. Why is Apple so expensive when there is no real justifiable reason? Because people will buy it and they will make more money. What kind of people run VIA rail? People a hell of a lot smarter than you OP.

    1. Well it's a probably a combination of reasons.. I'm sure it has something to do with the amount of people that use trains... and if they dropped the prices, they would need to expand the capacity of their trains which would be very costly building new rails, stations etc.. They're probably not complaining about how many people take advantage of the train at this time.

    2. Apple is expensive because they have crazy high margins. Via rail is expensive, but they are losing money. Hence the reasons are different and asking why Via Rail costs so much is a legitimate question.

  3. Apple products are seen as luxury goods by the public, and hence they can charge accordingly because the demand is there for them.

  4. VIA is a crown corporation that is not profitable at all and relies heavily on federal funding to stay afloat. It exists because there's a national imperative to provide a train service that allows different parts of the country to access one another. Your high user fees are probably a part of a cross-subsidization scheme to pay for the routes that virtually nobody uses but nevertheless need to be available.

  5. If you wait for the sales, VIA's much cheaper than a plane. If you're buying tickets at the last minute, good luck with that.

  6. The best thing I can advise is buy your tickets as early as possible. Or, usually they have discounts going on Tuesdays if you're travelling within the next week or so (they usually have Toronto<->Montreal tickets going from 25 to $39 one way )
