Instrumental jazz and classical music. I like to work up from Baroque through Classical to Romantic (don't like this period to much) and Impressionistic. I pretty much skip 20th century neo-classical movements. After Impressionistic, I just go straight into swing, then bebop, then hard-bop, cool jazz, and then latin jazz/bossa nova.
That John Mayer/Jack Johnson playlist. Relaxing, easy to let it become background noise 90% of the time but then hear a riff or chorus you like and sing along for a bit too.
I usually hate house, but Parra for Cuva makes this incredible deep house that's perfect for just chilling or if you need background music for studying. I'm not super picky about study music though, I don't mind if it's too energetic or wordy, it actually helps me focus and my mind will associate specific songs with what I'm studying which helps me remember stuff later.
Video game OSTs, They're the best to listen imo, especially when boss/battle themes come up. If you're curious, try listening to: FFVII - JENOVA FFX - Seymour's Battle Theme FFXIII - Blinded By Light.
However, if you're more into calming music, search: FFVIII Piano Collections - Fisherman's Horizon FFX-2 - Besaid Island FFX-2 Piano Collections - The Calm Lands.
Mos Def, Nas, Arsonists. Doesn't distract me. Find music you are really familiar with that, put on an album or a playlist so you aren't constantly fiddling
instrumental music - mostly calm songs but sometimes orchestra works too! Sometimes I would listen to house music...but it gets so distracting and pumped up for the wrong reasons (like pumped up for clubbing when I want to focus on exam prep -_- )

DeleteRomantic music is too expressive and dynamic, it gets distracting. Baroque and Classical are more coolly intellectual.
I was listening to some Renaissance dance music while catching up on readings the other day, too
all songs by kyosuke himuro
