I had a grad student for first year calculus 6 years ago or so. He was a major stoner, and I'm pretty sure he came to class high most of the time. Really nice guy though. One time he brought a massive basket of apples to class from his grandmother's orchard. Another time he came in on rollerblades.
H O R R I B L E She took off marks for random stuff, and then, when you asked her why, she would realize she "made a mistake" and give you the marks back. She seemed to have some kind of "I'm a grad student, therefore I'm better than you" mentality and nothing you ever did was good enough.
I had a grad student for one of my first year math classes. I thought he was great! Some people found his tests pretty challenging, but I found him really engaging and he had a great attitude. He ended up winning a teaching award, iirc.
I've had a few, had one for calculus which was alright but not the greatest. Then some for English too, one was good the other was alright. IMO its just as hit or miss as having a regular prof
Although, in general grad students who lecture do so because they usually really like it, or are sincerely interested in doing it and becoming better at it (which is not always true for profs.) Because grad students are not required to lecture. So yeah, hit or miss, but maybe more likely to be good than other profs who have to teach but are more research oriented.
Last term, I had one class taught by 2 grad students, another class taught by 3 grad students, and a third class taught by a random man whose educational background we were very unsure of. Worst term ever...Grad students can definitely make decent profs, but unfortunately not from my experience.
I had a grad student as one of my profs last term - her knowledge of the subject was good, but she was pretty bad at coming up with tests. She also lacked a lot of confidence in lecture, and frequently misunderstood questions or corrections. (This was for a math course)
My other experience with grad students as profs was last year, and he was just awful. No respect for students, off-colour jokes, unreasonable tests, the works.
Neither of these was as bad as some full profs that I've had though...
Mihaela from the MME department is a GREAT instructor! Very clear and good at commending a room. Very fair tests and approachable. One of the best instructors I've had.
Her supervising prof, Toyserkani, is a fantastic prof as well (even if his subject was tough as crap, haha). Great mentor + great attitude of the grad student = great instructor, it would seem.
