  2. I refuse to pay taxes because of my Libertarian ideals. The government should not take money from hard-working, responsible, and intelligent individuals and spend it recklessly on public services. Government services do not have market-driven competition and therefore have no incentive to improve. In almost all instances they are inefficient, poorly managed, and inferior to privately-run services. The superior alternative is to have smart, enterprising individuals form private services and compete with each other so the market can get the best service at the lowest price. The government should step out of the way of almost everything. Taxes are evil and should be lowered, if not abolished.

    3. @3 Assuming you're a student you're more likely to get money back when you do your taxes than to owe money. You also pay tax whenever you buy something and if you work legally the government takes money off your pay each month. There's no way around that without stealing everything you own. Depending on how much they take off, if you did your taxes you will get a portion of that back. So by not doing your taxes you are probably doing your finances more harm than not doing your taxes. You could be getting money back, and tax credit cheques from the government throughout the year. The government may waste our tax money more often than using it helpfully (reality is sad sometimes) but without it a lot of the things you probably appreciate at times, like paved roads and health care, would not exist. Go form your own country, it's the only way you'll get to try out your alternative hierarchy.

  4. Every tax season my dad volunteers at a community center where he teaches adults and teens who don't know how to do their own taxes to do their own taxes. So he gets them to do my taxes and other peoples as a test. He looks over it and changes/corrects it if need be

  6. It is a serious criminal offense to not file taxes and will result in audits six years back so please file and preferably have an accountant do it properly, you simply do not want to screw around with the CRA now or ever.

I can't stress enough how serious things can get with the CRA and the powers they have, do some Google searching.

Keep in mind it is not a crime to owe money to the CRA and they sometimes will make payment arrangements but to not file is a crime and they won't accept any excuses whatsoever.

I used to do my own taxes and then I had a lighter audit called a review and ever since then I use an accountant just for extra safety, an accountant get briefings from the CRA on the latest changes to the rules and it's such serious stuff it's best left to a professional.

People have lost everything and committed suicide over tax audits and audit rulings in Canada and the States. Seriously....don't mess with the CRA.
