QUESTION: Cheapest place to go grocery shopping?

  1. I find either Food Basics or Wal-Mart to be the places to get cheap groceries. There's a Food Basics on University and Fisher Hallman and there's the Wal-Mart Supercentre on Ottawa and Fisher Hallman, but that one is farther away from UW.

    2. There's also a Wal-Mart at Bridgeport and Weber (the 12 or 8 goes there). They have some really good sales once in a while. A Sobeys is also in the same plaza, so between Tuesday and Thursday, you get 10% off with a Club Sobey's card and student ID. Build a list of what is cheaper for one store and a list for the other, saves you a bit of money that way and it adds up :)

  2. I wouldn't go to Walmart for fruits and veggies but for everything else its the same stuff for cheaper.

  3. Tuesday through Thursday: Sobeys
    Tuesdays: Zehrs

Show your student card those days and get 10% off (on top of sales). Then use flyers to figure out which store has the best deals that week.
Also, sign up for the points programs. In 3 trips to Zehrs I got $40 worth of points, and have $45 at Sobeys (Sobeys take longer to build up, but their food is usually cheaper than Zehrs).

  4. Not Sobeys that's for sure.. ridiculously overpriced even with the 10% off during the mid-week days.

Food Basics, No Frills and Freshco are definitely among the cheapest overall. However if you go Walmart, Superstore, Freshco or No Frills they all price match. So just take a phone screenshot of another store's flyer price for that week and the cashier will match that price at checkout. Superstore and Zehrs have 10% off for students on Tuesdays and you can find the pink sticker reduced items on alot of goods.

  7. FreshCo! I find that their prices often beat Walmart's. But it is probably out of the way for most people here, but not too far for me. Otherwise, I would say Walmart.

Surprisingly, Shopper's sometimes has rare good deals that beat all the other grocers, but only if the item is going on sale. The regular prices are ridiculous and even worse than Sobey's. You just have to look at their flyers.
