QUESTION: I'm finishing up my third year here, and I still haven't made any close friends. A lot of the people I've met in my class are a little too opinionated for my liking, and they tend to have that holier-than-thou thing going on (cohort, so my classmates don't really change). I mean, I'm still friends with them.. but I miss having close friends.

I'd really like to meet some.. different people? People who don't feel the need to voice their negative opinions about every single prof/TA/student they meet, every single day. People who don't feel the need to complain about every single food services worker who serves them food. I guess what I want is.. I want to meet nice people? I mean, you don't have to have the same interests as me, just have a nice.. personality? (although that would be a huge plus!)

Alaksdfal. What I'm trying to ask is.. how do I make new friends? No.. that's not it. What I really want to ask is.. does anyone want to be my friend?

  1. I agree, it gets old hearing people bitch about profs/TAs all the time.

What are your interests? What are you studying?

    1. Hmm, I like playing poker, but I'm not that great at it. I'm also trying to learn the ukulele, which is sorta fun! Unfortunately I haven't had much time lately to practice, since I have a bunch of stuff due at the end of the month. :( Oh, and I'm in one of the smaller engineering programs.

I also made a throwaway email! (See post 8)

  2. Tell us about you. What do you like to do? What sorts of things would you like a successful friend applicant to do with you? What makes you happy?

    1. It would be nice to do non-school related things together. I'd actually love to go out and explore the area, but I dont really like wandering around on my own at night.

  3. I'm a fourth year and I'm kind of the same way. I grew up in the area so I have all of my high school friends here so I'm satisfied. I have a lot of "school friends" who are mostly just acquaintances I make small talk with and team up with for group work. I've just stopped caring because I wouldn't want to be friends with 99% of the people in my program anyways.

I'd be your friend OP, but if nothing works out, your time here is almost up!

  7. Well, I'm sort of in the same vein. I'm pretty relaxed, it takes a lot to get me worked up or complaining. I wouldn't mind having a friend like you. Feel free to put up a throw away email or something.

  8. Oh woah, OP here!

I went ahead and made a throwaway e-mail like you suggested. Here it is! uwthrowawayistaken@gmail.com

I'll be watching the Leafs game tonight, so who knows, that might give us something to talk about! :)

Oh, and I'm in a really small program, so I probably won't mention it out of fear that one of you might know me in real life.. sorry! D:

    2. What does a throwaway email do exactly? Just a way to get people to contact you without revealing your identity to the entire omg community?

  9. Wow OP, it's like you just read my mind. I too am like you and am kind of over people complaining 24/7 over petty things in life. I like appreciating life lol. We should be friends.

  10. Bloody hell you guys should have a meeting together! I'd fit your definition perfectly, except I'm not reaaaaaaaally looking for friends (happy loner?). But I'd be down to have a chill sesh since I don't have a webcam for skype or reaaaally feel like emailling..... ya

  11. Do you like boardgames? My house likes playing board games. If you enjoy playing Catan and aren't creepy, you'd be welcome to join :)

  12. OP, I feel for you. I have lots of friends back home, and made plenty of acquaintances, but no real close friends except for probably one or two. I also don't like how people keep complaining & hating on other people.

It's like I have lots of friends, but I'm still lonely.

    Oh & I'm a girl in engineering too :)
