QUESTION: Today I had to give up my laptop for repairs to get the ventilation fan replaced at Best Buy and they said it will take about a month to get it fixed. Does anyone know if it will actually take a month or are they (hopefully) overestimating?

  1. A month seems reasonable. My sister got her fan replaced too and it took 3 weeks mostly because of a backlog of stuff that needed repairing before hers at the store she went to. It would have taken longer if the repair shop had to order the part too.

That seems like a long time. I repaired my cellphone through CPR (link above), and they were great. They also do laptops. They weren't busy when I was there, so I waited 30min. If they were busy, they said they usually ask for 24 hours. They also do a diagnostic to make sure they are repairing the actual problem - the cost of that goes towards the final bill, so it really isn't an extra cost.

    And great customer service.

  3. It depends if they are actually fixing it in store or if they are shipping it back to the manufacturer. If they are shipping it back, then yes it will take a while because it takes time for it to get to the manufacturer etc.

  4. I know some tech people, and I'd imagine they'd say this is way too long. They would buy the part themselves online, and probably do it within an hour at home. But then again, taking apart a laptop to get to hard to reach places can be dangerous if not done carefully. You may also run into really dumb proprietary screws that you need an extra special screw driver for.

  5. Why would you take it to best buy?????????? Agh people these days always assuming the big box brand is the place to go...I guess if you want to wait a month then it is lol...

  6. Holy shit. It should take maybe a few hours.. Go to Canada computers, get help to buy correct fan. Follow repair manual online (hopefully you have a dell) and replace the fan. Bam done. If you are totally clueless there are lots of online resources to use, use them.

  7. There's also a computer repair shop on King St called Waterloo Networks. I've had to have the same repair done to my old laptop twice, and Waterloo Networks did it for $100 cheaper than Best Buy and had it fixed within a week while Best Buy took around 3-4 weeks. The only reason I went to Best Buy in the first place was because my good friend worked there and used his employee discount for me.
