Hell no, they raised my tuition by 600$ in the middle of the term in my final term (Spring 2013, this last summer). A final fuck you from the university that I'll never forget.
If I am making a ton of money, I would donate to my faculty or something that will go directly to funding a specific project, but not to the university as a general donation.
An individual making $80k is doing very well for themselves and probably better than 90% of the rest of the general population so relative to that, yes, it is a lot of money to earn.
Throughout my years here, I've gained nothing but contempt the nano program, which is marketed as an engineering program but involves useful design work save for the FYDP. Its just a science program, preparing all of those involved for research and graduate studies, instead of teaching us to be engineers.
Also, CECA has treated me like shit for every one of my co-op terms, forcing me to take jobs I've hated, and not helping me get out of my rut.
If UW really wants me to be a donor, they have to restore my faith that they actually care about the undergrads here, and that they can make the nano-program actually useful so that engineering firms will want to hire us.
Absolutely, because I'm proud that my department is #1 in Canada and I hope that my contribution will help continue the legacy. In return, I expect commensurate recognition, fame (e.g., profiling my achievements in brochures), and the Advancement Office to help alumni network and give each other a leg up in career pursuits or business opportunities.
Anyways despite AFM having extremely high tuition, I would still consider donating. HOWEVER, my biggest problem is that the school has no accountability of where my money goes. I've heard they use the higher AFM tuition to subsidize other programs, I've heard they use it to pay high salaries....I've heard too many things, likely false. The point is that the school has not been open about it. For that reason, I refuse to donate.
Is this the new definition of school spirit? Anyway, the school has leeched enough money from their students (especially in programs like yours that have ridiculous tuition).
UW Assets 1.5 Billion. Surplus 595 million. Income after taxes 61 million. Here are links to UW's balance sheet and income for the last few years.
UW's 2012 balance sheet Assets 1.5 Billion. Surplus 595 million. Income after taxes 61 million UW's 2011 balance sheet Assets 1.4 Billion. Surplus 525 million. Income after taxes 68 million UW's 2010 balance sheet Assets 1.3 Billion. Surplus 437 million. Income after taxes 66 million UW's 2009 balance sheet Assets 1.1 Billion. Surplus 342 million. Income after taxes 23 million
Maybe I'm wrong (and please correct me if so), but it looks like the whole alumni donor thing doesn't even matter. The "donations" line is pittance compared to what they are pulling in from what looks like student fees.
@14a, 14 here. Yes it's a drop in the bucket for UW. Could be an image thing and having it just makes UW look more like a charity than a powerful institution. You aren't wrong.
No. After dropping over $40,000 on a piece of paper that I worked by ass off to get, I don't feel like I owe the school anything.

Delete+1. Came here to say the same thing. If anything, the university should give successful grads money for bolstering the school's reputation.

ReplyDeleteNever, till I have like 10 million dollars to donate so that a building can be named after me:)
ReplyDeleteIf I end up making over $80K a year, sure.
ReplyDelete$80K/year isn't that much money..
DeleteAn individual making $80k is doing very well for themselves and probably better than 90% of the rest of the general population so relative to that, yes, it is a lot of money to earn.
DeleteIt's a lot compared to what my parents are making, and we're managing to live finely with it.
Delete@5a condescending bitch
DeleteI think I've given them enough money
ReplyDeleteNo, can't say I'd want to give more than I have already. Plus, when I'm donating money, it's to other causes.

+1, the university cares about getting new students so much that they are willing to fuck over their current students.

ReplyDeleteYeah fuck that. I've dropped way too much money here. They should use what I gave them properly.
ReplyDeleteI hope you use what they gave you properly.
DeleteDepression and suicidal thoughts?
DeleteThat's your own fault
DeleteWow 10.c, really? Let's not even launch into a debate about how wrong your statement is.
DeleteIf I ever ran into so much money I literally didn't know what to spend it on, I'd be more likely to leave it on a park bench.
ReplyDeleteSo little school spirit...

DeleteFuck no, I would never donate to this school, especially seeing where the money is going. 41 million for a fucking parking lot? Fuck off.

If this school actually gave a shit about its students, I might consider it. They've leeched enough money from me already.

DeleteI'd rather donate to a specific research program or something that would better the academic community instead of -just- the university. :/
