O.P. here - @10,2. Apologies. I was not aware that a lot of names I hear everyday have a meaning associated with them because I am not very familiar with the bible. I guess I will do some more research.
Eastern names are different in that the written characters carry the meaning. So if your name meant "Summerhaven Grove", it would be written as "Summerhaven Grove". Western names, on the other hand, have assigned meanings, but many (especially biblical ones) have no semantic relation. I believe that's what OP was trying to say.
But that's not true at all -- biblical names are just in Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek. The only meaningless names I know of are the 20th/21st century "creative" ones.
Right, like Jason or Michael ... which are probably in the top 100 most common names for people in our age group. What's wrong with an "uncreative" name again?
Not east Asian, but my name means "tree" in one language and "bright light" in another.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, my Chinese name has "grove" in it...
DeleteNames in all countries have meanings associated with them, not just East Asian ones. (see: exotification)
ReplyDeleteI'm always curious how they chose their english names.. I know someone with the english name, Gemini :D
ReplyDeleteQuiet grace.
ReplyDeleteSmall river
ReplyDeleteCelestial light/ the sun. Associated with optimism/brightness.
ReplyDeleteI found OP's wording pretty strange too. Don't think it's a common practice anywhere to give meaningless names to your children...

DeleteThere are lots of occupational-type names in English that have direct meanings.
ReplyDeleteThe real question is why all the female FOBs pick old lady names and why all the males pick cliche biblical names like Jason or Michael...
