QUESTION: Has anyone tried the new Ye's? / What's the menu like etc.

  1. If you mean the renovated Ye's by Conestoga, don't go. I went expecting it to be the same menu/ordering style but just like revamped inside since it wasn't that nice of an environment before. It's not though. It's an all you can eat buffet where you get up and get the food yourself. It's a clusterfuck of people because the food is all cramped together and not set up so that you can circle it properly. It's noisy. The sushi tastes bad because it's not as freshly made. Do not go if you are going for the ayce sushi. If you just want the appetizer stuff, then go.

Also the plates are super small so you have to take like 50 trips.

    1. I'm going to post as a reply to this one, because 1 is either my girlfriend or somebody with the same opinion as her. We went as a party of three (my dad came with us as well).

I have to second a lot of what 1 said. The buffet system made no sense. Besides the chaos, we were having trouble piecing together why having to get up to get our food was better than ordering it with a piece of paper. We weren't getting our sushi any faster (since the guy still had to make it) and there was a smaller selection (since it's not being made on demand).

One point in their favour - my dad is a fan of Japanese food, but does not like raw fish. There were lots of entrees and teriyaki meats for him to choose from. If your primary goal in going to Ye's is to eat teriyaki and pork cutlets, you're going to have a faster, more pleasurable experience.

But that's not actually the case. The primary goal of Conestoga Ye's marketbase is actually to feast on a huge amount of sushi. And this is what struck me most about Ye's Buffet. The owners have completely shifted the tone, atmosphere, and goal of the restaurant.

Traditionally, the three Ye's restaurants have catered to different crowds. Conestoga Ye's was looking to attract large groups of students - the dining area was laid out in such a way as to stuff as many of us in there as possible. This was working, because the place was almost always packed. The Ye's across from City Hall had (and still has) more of a homey atmosphere - it's a place to go on a date, or with a smaller group of friends. The Ye's at Sportsworld Drive was for classy dining, servicing an older, wealthier crowd.

Ye's Buffet has done away with the Conestoga Ye's model in favour of the Sportsworld Ye's model. It's an entirely different environment. As 1 said, the plates are smaller - they're trying to encourage customers to eat smaller portions. This is no longer a place to gorge with buddies - it is a place to bring colleagues during a business meeting, or to take your elderly parents when they come to visit, or really anything else you need a high-class restaurant to do. It's definitely influenced by some of the "atmosphere" sushi restaurants in Toronto - less focus on food, more focus on experience.

It's a strange choice, and one that I don't think is going to serve them fiscally. In becoming a buffet, they've set themselves up to compete with other buffets in town which are both far cheaper and far better.

I'm a bit concerned, honestly, because downtown Kitchener's Ye's is my favourite restaurant (besides the one I work in hurr hurr), and we're starting to see the format of this new Ye's creep in. At first I was excited about how nice the new menus look, but I'm realizing more and more that this comfortable, cozy location may soon start catering to people in a different social strata than myself - or anybody else who currently frequents there.

So, in proper TL;DR form - Ye's Buffet is bad. The selection is bad. The business plan is bad. It may be a bad omen to Ye's fans across KW. The appetizers and entrees are okay, but you can get appetizers at King's Buffet and entrees at Spring Rolls, and pay less. I encourage people to eat elsewhere, and I hope this place doesn't cause a drain on the other two great Ye's locations.

  2. I like the renovated Ye's, but the sushi selection isn't as good as it used to be. I guess it's like a typical Chinese food buffet now.

    1. Exactly. The appetizery/entree foods are good and they have more selection in this area and also have a really good dessert selection. The sushi is not very good anymore. Also I don't like that they don't have an obvious starting point for the buffet so you have a lot of people pushing into you and stuff(i.e Mandarin has plates only at the ends of the buffet counters and have it set up so you can circle around the entire thing keeping movement flowing)
