QUESTION: How do I ask my room mates to stop washing their clothes in the bathroom every night (without offending them)? They are basically hogging the room for >2hours every night.

  1. How is that even possible? If they wash their clothes every day, I'm assuming they are only washing one set of clothes (as all their other clothes should be clean from the previous day's washing) and how can that take that much time? Regardless, if they must do their laundry in the bathroom for whatever reason, I'd just ask if they could just do all their laundry once per week instead of every day.

    2. Ah, for some reason I read the 'they' and 'them' as being gender-neutral pronouns rather than plural. In that case if they're washing their clothes and you need to use the bathroom ask them if they can take a break while you do your business. Two hours is an unreasonable amount of time to occupy the bathroom, especially if your place only has one.

    3. OP here.

They are washing one outfit per day, which baffles my mind because they are in there for at least two hours a night (unless they are washing something else that I may have missed).

    1. Maybe their clothes are all really expensive hand-wash-only items.

  3. Wait. Is this actually a normal thing that people do?

  4. I don't understand this at all.

I have to hand wash a couple shirts from time to time. I do this pretty infrequently, I keep them as clean as possible when I wear them and just re-wear them until I deem it necessary to wash.

So, to hand wash 3 shirts takes about 15 minutes, and I usually do it in the kitchen sink. So I don't get how they can be in their for 2 hours. I find it hard to believe that they might own scores of hand wash designer clothes, but they won't pay to have it laundered.

So this kinda forces me to believe their washing their clothes in the bathroom because 1) they are too cheap to use the machines, or 2) they are too lazy to take their stuff to a launderette.

Have they thought about how much time they waste? They could be way more productive with their school work if they spent that time studying, or more relaxed if they used that time to have fun. The personal cost to hand washing all your own clothes just does not seem worth it to me. But different cultures hold different values I guess.
