You don't "need" whitening. Surface stains can be diminished with cleaning but whitening products make the enamel brittle. It subsequently wears away making the enamel layer thinner. Ironically, as you age, your teeth will become darker from accumulation in the inner part of the bone. These "stains" cannot be whitened and you end up with a thinner enamel to cover it.
