QUESTION: Has Anyone taken AMATH 250 or CO 227 with Patrick Roh? He sounds really intimidating and I'm the type to ask lots of questions during office hours. Any suggestions?

  1. He's a good prof. Clear, but fast paced during class. I went to his office hour once and he was very good with answering my question. He comes of as a little grumpy but he is definitely good-willed.

  2. I had him for MATH 119 a long time ago.
    He's a bit of a douche.
I remember in an angry moment he told our class about his super smart "friend" who didn't make it into computer engineering, and we didn't deserve to be in the program and so on.
    Big calves though.

  3. He is one of the meanest profs I have ever had, and very very serious. However, he was also an excellent teacher. As long as you ask intelligent questions, and don't ask him to re-explain something he went over several times already, you will be fine. Just don't expect flowers and sunshine all the time with him, and ESPECIALLY don't expect special treatment of any kind.

  4. He is highly highly condescending and annoying in the way he addresses the class, asks questions to them, etc.. I wrote this on a course eval for a class he taught in the spring. I walk by rooms where he is teaching CO 227 and MATH 237 and it is quite clear he has disregarded this advice. Also on the syllabus for MATH 136 of all courses he gives the students a pep talk where he basically says 'By virtue of being in this math class you are some of the smartest math students on earth.'

  5. He is a complete asshat, agreed.
I had him for Discrete Maths. He was condescending, abrasive, and generally rude and unpleasant. It resulted in most of the class being at odds with him, and generated a hostile environment for the entire term. Seeing him walk in the door was an unpleasant experience, daily. He knows the material well (of course he should, it was a first year course) but part of being a professor is being able to manage a class. You don't have to be a sweetie-pie, on the contrary, it is good to have a level of control. But being a douchenozzle is not an appropriate way to run a class.

The only class we had with a shittier class-prof relationship was Ladan.

  6. Had him for MATH 135. Spends 68% of the class talking shit about Laurier and Arts programs. I calculated that number myself.

    1. On the very first day of class he made a joke about English literature majors where he did a 'dumdum retard' voice. All I can say to that is fuck you. Would periodically make remarks like 'and we know three is less than four unless you're studying math at Queen's.' Just so juvenile and unprofessional. The mind reels.

    2. Yeah half the time our in-class talks were about how stupid arts people are and how stupid everyone from other universities was. We are a class of first-year engineering students. Hardly deserving of praise and hardly in need of more ego to fuel the autism.

  7. Ugh hated him. Please don't take a class with him if you can avoid it. Biggest mistake of my life

  8. Complete asshole. He taught me Math 135 last year, he knew the materiel well and did a good job at presenting it. However, when I went to his office hours to ask for further explanation on a topic he told me to just re-read the textbook and maybe I would understand then. No help at all.
